Quick and Easy Whimsical Pom Pom Crafts

Crafting Ideas, Pom Poms

Do you enjoy a bit of whimsy? Are you an “outside of the box” kind of crafter? Do you need fresh and fun crafting ideas? Great! Then suffer from crafter’s block no more. If you have a stash of pom poms in your crafting supplies, you are well on your way to fashioning any number of festive creations.

Stocking caps, mittens and gloves are a great stand by when you need a quick and inexpensive gift. Using fabric glue, randomly scatter pom poms all over a stocking cap and on the backs of mittens and gloves. Your inexpensive store bought bargains instantly become an impressive and cute original. By changing the color of the pom poms or gluing them around the cuffs and brim only, you can change the look of your creations in many different ways and you won’t have to worry about the recipient receiving the same thing from somebody else.

Give new life to a much used purse, tote bag or backpack. Monogram your initials with pom poms in your favorite color or spell out fun and funky words. The size and color of pom poms give a wide range of options.

Make creatures for pens:

Snowmen–Glue two white pom poms together. Attach black seed beads for the eyes, mouth and the buttons on his tummy. Add a dab of blush for his cheeks and paint the tip of a toothpick orange and glue in place for a nose. Roll a tiny bit of felt into a cylinder shape for the hat top and glue to a circle of the same felt slightly larger than the cylinder for the top hat brim. Glue to the top of the snowman’s head. Tie a strip of fabric around the neck. Finish by gluing a pin back to the back of the snowman.

Bears–Glue two tan pom poms together for the head and the body. Using seven smaller tan pom poms, attach ears, hands feet and nose. Glue two black seed beads for the eyes. Using embroidery floss, yarn or thin ribbon, tie a bow and glue to the bear’s neck. Finish by gluing a pin back to the back of the bear.

Chicken–Glue a medium and large size pom pom together for the head and body. Cut a small triangle of orange felt to the head for a beak. Glue the beak and two black seed beads for the eyes to the chicken’s head. Glue a tuft of a yellow feather to the top of the chicken’s head. Make a small bow from embroidery floss, yarn or thin ribbon and glue to the neck. Finish by gluing a pin back to the back of the chicken.

Caterpillar–Glue five green pom poms together, forming a line. Decide on the end for the head. Glue two black seed beads to the head for the eyes. Bend a chenille stem (pipe cleaner) around the “neck” and bend above the head. Clip at the desired length for the antennae and curl the ends slightly. Randomly glue green sequins on the caterpillar’s body. Finish by gluing a pin back to the bottom of the caterpillar.

Use the same design and glue to the top of pencils for pencil toppers. Make a batch for your child’s class or give out as favors at a birthday party. Tuck into a stocking on Christmas morning or attach to the top of a gift instead of a bow.

Completely cover the front of a journal with a plush carpet of pom poms. Using a contrasting color, before gluing, replace appropriate pom poms to form an initial. Any teenage girl will love it.

Form daisies on a pair of store bought terry cloth slippers. Gather the supplies and use this project as a craft project for a girl’s sleepover.

Decorate sweaters or sweatshirts using fabric glue and arranging the pom poms in the shape of holiday symbols.

The look and style of all these various designs can be altered according to the color of the pom poms. Using all the same color will give a more sophisticated look. Creating a pattern with two different colors brings out a whimsical feel, while using a multitude of colored pom poms are more juvenile. Play around with different arrangements and colors to fashion the appearance that is most desirable to your eye.
