The Plott hound belongs to the medium sized dog breed family. It has a body of proportion, which means that its head, torso, chest, legs, and tail do not protrude out of place. And it is a muscular breed of dog.

Fur of the Plott hound is extremely short and rough to the touch. Coat color will vary in this breed of dog, because they tend to have scattered patterns all over them. They are normally a tan or light brown covered with black or grey dots.

This breed of dog is what dog breeders like to call “A drool offender.” Plott hounds drool like crazy. So, if you don’t like drool, this dog is NOT for you! They aren’t as bad as other drooling dogs, but they are pretty bad when it comes to drool.

Height:

Height between the two genders will not vary in this breed of dog. Both the male and female normally stand to be 20-24 inches (51-61 cm) tall. The previously listed height is pretty much where this breed of dog will stay; they don’t usually grow more or less then the 20-24 inches (51-61 cm) tall.

Weight:

Weight between the two genders will not in this breed of dog. Both the male and female usually weigh in at 45-55 pounds (20-25 kg.) The female will sometimes weigh less then the male, but can weigh to be as much as the male or even more then the male.

Temperament:
This breed of dog is highly intelligent. They love children! Plott hounds are loyal, loving, caring, playful, witty, lively, active, and extremely curious dogs. This dog is highly skillful in the area of hunting and will do almost anything to catch their prey. The Plott hound must be watched if around other larger animals, because it will go after the larger animal. These larger animals include: bears (all the way from a little brown bear to a large grizzly bear.

Life span:

Plott hounds live an average life of 12-14 years (144-168 months) of age.

Living conditions:
This dog is NOT recommended for the apartment life. They are highly active indoors and out. The average apartment will not be able to house a dog this hyper. They require large yards where they can run and play. Many of this breed will catch and kill other animals, so if you are against this DO NOT GET THIS BREED!

Health problems:

The Plott hound has a large appetite and will eat whatever it can. Obesity is a common problem with this breed of dog. Do not walk your Plott hound after it has eaten. Stomachaches and cramps commonly occur with this breed. Give them about 30 minutes after they eat before exercising them.
