Product Review: Sun Chips Cinnamon and Sun Chips Apple N’ Caramel

Kids Lunch, Parents and Kids, Sun Chips

Potato chips are one of the most addictive, bad for you, foods ever created. From all the name brands, to those obscure flavors and shapes that your mind forces you to buy, Sun Chips remain of the best tasting and most healthy choices. I recently encountered two new Sun Chips flavors and decided I would try them both, for the sake of the consumer.

Sun chips brand multi-grain chips are now offered in Cinnamon and Apple N’ Caramel. Feeling guilty from the time I placed the bags in the cart, I was sure I was buying dessert instead of a snack. But, as with all Sun Chips, these are supposed to be a healthy alternative.

Each of the new Sun Chip flavors offer a 15 chip serving, which packs a mere 130 calories, 6 grams of fat and 40 milligrams of sodium. Those figures are fantastic in the potato chip market, so I decided it was time to taste. Wow, was my first impression.

The Sun Chips Cinnamon flavor holds the same multi-grain taste as the traditional Sun Chip, but with a covering of what looks like cinnamon and sugar. The sweet mixed with the grainy is a wonderful combination loved by both parents and kids in my home. The Apple N’ Caramel Sun Chip, created the same loving reaction from all. While the predominant taste was the caramel, the subtle apple and grain leaves you knowing you just ate something good for you but feeling like you cheated.

Sun Chips are, by far, not the least expensive chip on the market. At $2.50 for a 5 3/4 ounce bag, these chips are not ones that I would pack in the kids lunch every day, but certainly a healthy alternative to a sweet and sugary, after dinner snack. But, my other hand would have to say that you are going to pay more for a healthy version of the horrid potato products mass produced for grocery stores. High fat, high calorie snacks that are bad for your heart and waist line. The extra money may be worth more to our bodies in the long run.

The Sun Chips flavors Cinnamon and Apple N’ Caramel are winners in my book. These great tasting, yet healthy, alternatives to traditional chips offer parents a great tasting snack that kids will eat. I will purchase the Sun Chips again, in all the offered flavors.
