Product Review: Sno Bol Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Upon inspection of my bathroom, my brother, who was paying his first visit to my home, announced, “You did a pretty good job of cleaning the bathroom except you need to use Sno Bol.” I asked him to explain himself. “Sno Bol,” he repeated. “Mom uses it, and it gets rid of all of those stains in the toilet.” Oh. I made a mental note of the critique and the brand of toilet bowl cleaner, but I did not take him too seriously. After all, how many toilet bowls had my brother cleaned in his life?

However, the dark stains in the toilet bowl left by the streaming water of the flushed toilet was disconcerting. I thought the dark stains were due to frequent use, and nothing could be done about it. I had used bleach and Lysol regularly to clean and disinfect the bowl, and I had scrubbed to no avail. The stains on the toilet bowl persisted.

On my parent’s most recent visit to our home, my mom and I were picking up supplies at Super Wal-Mart. As we made our way down the cleaning aisle, my mom paused and squealed, “Sno Bol!” I remembered my brother’s remark from a few months prior. My mom explained that she could no longer find this particular toilet bowl cleaner where she lived. She extolled its virtues and grabbed four bottles of the toilet bowl cleaner. I decided to take one bottle of Sno Bol for myself. She encouraged me to take the rest of the bottles of Sno Bol remaining on the shelf. I told her that I would take one of the bottles of toilet bowl cleaner and see if it worked before buying another. She waved her hand and said, “Sno Bol is the best. It always works. Nothing is better.” Still skeptical, I placed one 32 fl. oz bottle of the toilet bowl cleaner for $1.66 into my cart.

After my family’s brief visit to our home, I got out the bottle of Sno Bol and gave it a try. I pushed and twisted the cap of the toilet bowl cleaner open. When the bottle of Sno Bol is held horizontally, the thin, blue liquid of the toilet bowl cleaner squirts out without much pressure. In fact, if you are opening a new bottle of Sno Bol, be aware of this fact. The new, unused bottle of Sno Bol is under enough pressure that only a light squeeze is needed for the liquid toilet bowl cleaner to come out. It takes a bit of practice to get the pressure just right.

The bottle of Sno Bol is well designed. The angled spout makes it easy to get the liquid toilet bowl cleaner squirted precisely under the rim of the toilet. When I saw the thin liquid of toilet bowl cleaner stream down the sides of the toilet bowl, my skepticism returned. How could the toilet bowl cleaner clean my toilet if all of its liquid ended up in the water and not stuck to the sides of the bowl? Upon closer inspection, I noticed that a blue colored foam clung to the vertical hard water stains of the toilet bowl. I’m sure that this was the result of some chemical reaction that I had learned in chem lab but had long forgotten. Sno Bol contains hydrochloric acid as its cleaning agent.

After waiting less than a minute, I began to brush the toilet bowl, and what do you know? The stains were gone. I was impressed. I am still impressed. My husband is impressed. I called my mom and told her that I was impressed. She laughed and said, “I told you so. Sno Bol is the best.”
