Product Review: Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo

Dandruff Shampoo, Selsun Blue

I’ve had bad dandruff probably since I was born. As a child, my mother would use Neutrogena dandruff shampoo on me. But it didn’t work too well. I would shake my hair and say to the kids at school that I could make it snow. Looking back on that, it’s something to laugh at. As a teenager, I tried the newer products that Neutrogena came out with. But, none of them helped much at all.

After I became an adult, I wondered about the other dandruff products out there. Head and Shoulders did nothing to help my poor scalp. From seeing the commercials, I suspected that Selsun Blue was a good product. But being a blonde, I was always afraid of Selsun Blue because of the color of it. As any blonde can tell you, blonde hair tends to grab onto other colors. One time, my hair turned the color of a green shampoo. So, of course, I was hesitant of Selsun Blue.

Selsun Blue, however, isn’t blue. It’s a dark green color. It’s enough to scare any blonde. The first time I used it, I cringed as I put in on my hair. I surely would have looked like a clown if my hair had turned that color. However, I was pleasantly surprised when my hair’s color wasn’t affected. But more than that, I saw an immediate difference in my scalp.

Back when I first used this shampoo, my scalp would tingle. It was as if I could feel it working. However, I don’t feel the tingling sensation anymore. I don’t know if the maker’s of this product have changed the shampoo over the years or if maybe I’ve gotten used to it. Nevertheless, the shampoo still works just as good as it always has.

I am a natural blonde, but a few months ago, I had my hair colored to a shade lighter than it was. On the back of the Selsun Blue bottle, it warns to make sure that you rinse your hair well if your hair is colored. I was terrified that my hair would now turn the green color of the shampoo. But after a few weeks, I had to risk it since my scalp was itching. I was pleased that my hair’s color didn’t change.

I only have to use this shampoo once a week for my scalp to remain close to normal. I prefer this because most, if not all, dandruff shampoos do not get my hair very clean since they are mostly for the scalp and not the hair. After I use the Selsun Blue, I always use another shampoo to clean my hair. Maybe this also helps to prevent my colored hair from turning green? I highly recommend this dandruff shampoo over all the others out there that are available over-the-counter. Unlike its competition, it really does work well.
