Product Review: Catnip Extract by Herbs for Kids

Catnip

This tincture is marketed as a digestive remedy. It is wonderful for all stomach upsets but I have found it also works in many more ways as well. It is soothing to the nerves, is a mild analgesic and is useful for both children and adults.

Catnip (nepeta cataria) is perennial of the mint family. It has been used for centuries for it’s healing properties. Not only known to be loved by cats but very useful in the home remedy medicine chest.

I like to use this remedy not just for upset stomachs but it is wonderful for helping calm an overly upset and tired child. It is good for when your kids just can’t go to sleep because they are just too tired and can’t settle down.

Catnip is know for treating a variety of ailments. Such as; restlessness, nervousness, irritability, irritation, headaches and insomnia. It also reduces anxiety, stress and helps to relieve exhaustion.

I really love this remedy for teething with my daughter. She can get highly irritable and this has proven very effective with her!

This remedy can also be applied topically in a poultice for cuts.

It is also wonderful as a remedy for colic in infants. The manufacturer recommends this used for ages 1 and above but I have used it at 6 months old with wonderful results. use at your own discretion. But really, it is so gentle, just reduce the dose according to your child’s weight. You can consult with a certified herbalist if you have any questions. If your child is on other medications it would be wise to consult your health care practitioner.

The effect of catnip is cumulative. So one dose is usually good. It also can have a mild estrogen like effect so it should not be used excessively. This is a remedy to keep on hand for once in a while.

The ingredients in this remedy are; extract of catnip, coconut oil and/ palm kernel oil, glycerin, purified water and citric acid.

This remedy is kosher and it’s ingredients are certified organic and/ ethically wild crafted.

Catnip should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

A 1 oz bottle of this remedy costs around $6.50 and you can find it at health food stores, some major drugstores or through the internet. This remedy should be stored in a cool dry area and it’s shelf life is good for up to 2 years or more so it’s very cost effective. Especially when your whole family can benefit from using it! This would make a great new baby gift for expecting parents or those going through teething and terrible two’s!

I really like the Herbs for Kids brand because I know they will be effective in treating whatever ailment I come across with my young children. I like to keep a stock of these remedies on hand at all times and they have been life saving a time or two! They are very cost effective too which I like. I also know they contain all natural ingredients which is important to me. I try to avoid over the counter and synthetic medications whenever possible.
