Product Review: Alpen Cereal

Frosted Flakes, No Sugar Added, Unique Recipes

Alpen cereal is a brand of muesli cereal that is manufactured and sold by the British Weetabix food company. Alpen cereal includes crisp wheat flakes, plump juicy raisins, almond slivers, wholesome oats and roasted hazelnuts in their popular cereal line. Alpen cereal is typically available in the organic or imported foods aisles of major grocery stores in the United States. It can also be found easily in the corner bodegas of New York City. The average price for a box of Alpen cereal in the United States is around $3.99 per box.

I first discovered Alpen cereal on a trip to London a few years back. I was staying at a Holiday Inn Express outside of London and Alpen cereal was part of their free breakfast. As someone that is rather health conscious, I immediately recognized the benefits of Alpen as it is packed with omega three rich almonds as well as featuring the always good for you staples of oats.

Alpen cereal has been around since 1971, and features a variety of flavors for different taste buds. Alpen Original cereal is easily recognizable by the red coloring on the box. It features the staples of crisp wheat flakes, plump juicy raisins, almond slivers, wholesome oats and roasted hazelnuts and it is considered a sugared cereal. Although, I find it to be a very mild sweetness, as opposed to something like Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, which I find to be extremely sweet. Alpen No Sugar Added cereal is marked by its blue almost turquoise coloring on the box. Alpen No Sugar Added cereal features all of the same staple ingredients as Alpen Original cereal minus any extra sugar for sweetener. Instead, it features the addition of even more juicy raisins, which act as a natural sweetener for the cereal.

Alpen No Sugar Added cereal is my absolute favorite product in the Alpen cereal line. The closest American cereal to it is Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds. However, I find that Alpen No Sugar Added cereal has a better flavor than Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds, as well as having the added benefit of the raisins. Sometimes I also add dried cranberries to my bowl of Alpen No Sugar Added cereal for a different flavor, which is also quite tasty.

The newest addition to the Alpen cereal line is Alpen Apricot and Nut No Sugar Added. It features the same ingredients as Alpen No Sugar Added, with the addition of Sultanas, Dates, Apricots, Pistachios and Hazelnuts for a bit of a different flavour.

One of my favourite things about Alpen is the unique recipes that are featured on the box. I recently followed a recipe on my box of Alpen No Sugar Added to make scones using the Alpen cereal as the main ingredient. They ended up being the absolute best scones I have ever tasted.

I also love the freshness that Alpen seems to have when you taste it. It does not have a processed and dried out taste like some cereals. I personally eat Alpen No Sugar Added cereal on a regular basis because I love not only how it tastes, but that it has such good for you natural ingredients in each box. I would highly recommend it for anyone that is health conscious or on a diet.
