Poe’s Tavern in Sullivan’s Island, SC

Edgar Allen Poe, Gourmet Burgers

Mention the name “Edgar Allen Poe” and instantly there are several things that come to mind. An image of a raven for example, or the picture of a pale, gaunt, solemn face. Chances are, though, that burgers aren’t anywhere on that list. That is, until you’ve visited Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina.

The connection between Poe and the Charleston area is legitimate. Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie, on the far end of Sullivan’s Island, for two years beginning in 1827. Sullivan’s Island is one of the many small islands mere miles from Charleston. Poe’s Tavern was founded to “preserve the spirit of Edgar Allen Poe.” Not only does it do exactly that, it serves some of the greatest gourmet burgers to be found, all representing famous Poe stories of course!!

When you first step in, Poe’s Tavern looks like any other burger joint- wood floors, a bar, and small booths and tables. But almost as quickly, this place sets itself apart. Nearly every inch of wall is covered with something Poe related, be it portraits, story illustrations, or movie posters of big screen adaptations. Even the bathrooms are wallpapered with pages from his books!! As mentioned before, the theme extends to the menu as well. Although Poe’s serves appetizers, soups, and salads, the real appeal is in the burgers. With names like the Gold Bug (a cheeseburger), the Pit and the Pendulum (cheese and bacon), and the Black Cat (onions, chili, cheese and bacon) it’s clear that the owners enjoy promoting, and building on, Poe’s creativity.

Now let’s talk about the food, because atmosphere aside, that really is the main draw to any eatery. I’ve been to Poe’s twice now, and both times the burgers have knocked me off my feet! Their hamburger patties are an inch thick and cooked as you like them, served dressed with lettuce, tomato, and red onions. On my first visit, I had the Tell-Tale Heart, which is served with bacon and cheese and topped with a fried egg. An unusual combo, but it works. (I’ve noticed burgers served with fried eggs in a couple of gourmet burger shops since eating here. Apparently, it’s a trend.) On my most recent visit, however, I ate one of the best meals I’ve ever had the pleasure of. The Annebelle Lee is a burger, topped with a crab cake and freshly made remoulade sauce. Brilliant!! With the hamburger patty, crab cake, dressings and bun, this burger was an intimidating 3 inches thick, but still provided no real match for me. (The Poe’s Tavern menu can be viewed online and sadly, I no longer see this one listed. However, the menu changes frequently and it may show up again.) Poe’s also serves a “burger of the day” special. When we ate, this was a burger topped with a fried pineapple slice that had been marinated in teriyaki. My fiancé ordered this one, and again, it tasted awesome.

Poe’s offers a pretty wide selection of food and I’m confident that even those of discriminating tastes can find something pleasing here. All burger varieties are offered with a chicken breast in place of beef if desired, and there is a small selection of seafood. As with most themed eateries, merchandise is available for purchase as well. Remember that lunch fondly while wearing a Poe’s Tavern t-shirt!! Poe’s full menu (including their extensive beer and wine selections), exact location (the physical address is Poe’s Tavern, 2210 Middle Street,
Sullivan’s Island, SC), and more can be viewed at poestavern.com. If you’re in the Charleston area, I’d highly recommend a trip Poe’s. Your literary appreciation, and your taste buds, will thank you!!
