Outdoor Decorating Ideas for Your Patio, Porch, Deck, Garden

Chinese Lanterns, Outdoor Decor, Outdoor Decorating

Spring is the perfect time to deck your outdoor spaces with color and comfort. With a little imagination you can turn a boring wall into a blooming garden or a faded table into the brightest spot on your deck or porch. Whether your outdoor space is covered or exposed to the elements, here’s how you can decorate the spot for months of summer fun.

Add an outdoor beanbag

They are comfy and fun and, but best of all, outdoor bean bags add a splash of color to your outdoor decor. Made from weather proof fabric, outdoor bean bags can decorate an open area on your lawn or a shady spot on a roofless porch or deck. Kids especially love to sink into a bean bag. Just look online for a rainbow of colors and sizes.

Splash on a tablecloth

If you don’t have the time or patience to paint a drab outdoor table, why not dress it up in a colorful summer tablecloth? Home stores carry vinyl tablecloths in every size and pattern. Simply spread the tablecloth on your table and leave it there. All you’ll have to do before using the spot is wipe the vinyl clean with a cloth. It’s a cheap outdoor decorating idea that takes seconds to implement.

Decorate a Wall

With this outdoor decorating idea, your wall will seem to bloom, decorating your porch, deck or the entryway to your home. Simply buy cheap ceramic pots at a garden center. Paint the pots in a bright color, such as blue to imitate the summer sky, or yellow to capture the beauty of the sun. Then hang the pots in a cluster on the wall and plant them with a fragrant, easy-to-grow plant, like sage (with its charming purple buds). Your wall will look like a garden.

Hang Colorful Chinese Lanterns

Like beautiful bubbles floating in the air, strings of small Chinese lanterns will fill your outdoor decor with whimsy and color. Look for Chinese lanterns online to find the best deals. Lanterns range from 3 inches to 24 inches in size. Simply hang them on a string between tree branches or under the eaves above your deck. And if you have a patio umbrella, consider hanging lanterns around its outer diameter.

Use bright cushions

Like the flowers that bloom in your garden, bright cushions will cast a splash of color over your drab outdoor furniture. Save money by buying a set of matching cushions in a range of patterns. Decorate your wicker arm chairs, hammock or rocking chairs.

Paint old furniture

Nothing brightens a bare outdoor spot like a bright sitting area. Look for old outdoor furniture at thrift stores or garage sales. Sand down any imperfections, then prime the furniture with water-based primer. Finally, paint the set in a bright decorative color. I painted an old picnic table (which my neighbor threw away) in apple red and decorated my back garden with it.
