If the Swiss Family Robinson movie scene of children riding an Ostrich made you giggle, then the Arizona Ostrich Festival will provide a hearty laugh. During the second weekend of March, Chandler, Arizona plays host to the largest gathering of ostrich fans in the known universe.

The art of Ostrich ranching has grown during the past decade in several states. Chandler Arizona holds the distinction of being the home of the largest ostrich ranches in the United States. For nearly 20 years, the Tumbleweed Park in Chandler is overrun with spectators for the annual Ostrich Festival.

In excess of 300,000 spectators gather to watch, and participate in avian themed rituals and races. Trained ostrich jockeys in multiple races ride the somewhat goofy looking birds during the Chandler Ostrich Festival. If watching mere humans attempt to control the large birds in a race was not enough enjoyment, live music, food, and carnival rides are also a part of the annual event.

Adventurous eaters can also dine on ostrich cuisine while watching the races. A parade exotic animal displays, petting zoon, and arts and crafts show are also highlights of this unique festival. A 5K “Fun-Run” is also a highlight of the Chandler Ostrich Festival. All ages and abilities are welcome to run, walk, or wheel their way through the downtown area.

The Ostrich Festival parade is a unique mixture of traditional fair floats and Chandler’s own twist on small-town favorites. The Ollie Trolley is always a crowd pleaser at the annual festival. Over 100 parade entries are typically featured in the Chandler Ostrich Festival parade.

Special entertainment and amusement offerings, which are always popular with festival visitors routinely, include the live ostrich display, muscle car show, pig races, sea lion show, fire truck display, “Jest in Time” circus, medieval jousting, kid’s zone, petting zoo, demolition derby, and roving jugglers.

Regional and former headline bands of the classic rock era hit the stage throughout the festival. Musical groups who often perform at the Chandler Ostrich Festival include a Beatles tribute band, – AZ Beats, Grass Roots, Foghat, Mark Chestnut, and Heartbreaker – a Led Zeppelin tribute band.

Chandler locals also have the opportunity garner their fifteen minutes of fame during the annual festival. Martial arts athletes and area dance groups entertain during the morning and afternoon hours. The Chandler Ostrich Festival attracts visitors from around the world and offers ranchers to network not only with potential buyers, but to share their love of their work with novice ostrich owners.

The Chandler Ostrich Festival is a clean and safe environment for a family excursion. During the evening when the prime musical acts perform, the crowd does get a bit rowdy for the little ones near the stage.

The festival offers a weekend of fun without denting the wallet. All day passes include amusement rides and are available for less than $17 if purchased in advance. Passes purchased at the admission gate are available for a slightly higher fee of $25 per person. General admission tickets do not include the carnival rides. These tickets can be purchased for a fee of $7 per adult, $6 for senior citizens, and $5 for children 6-12 years of age.
