Two nights ago, while shopping at my local Walgreens Pharmacy, I happened to notice a type of snack cakes on display that were a real blast from the past. The snack cakes that I am referring to are The Original Scooter Pies. Truth be told, I had forgotten about these tasty treats. It has been at least a decade since I last saw or heard of Scooter Pies and seeing them again at Walgreens really brought back some memories. When I was a kid, Scooter Pies were among my favorite types of snack cakes and I used to eat them quite frequently. In case you don’t know what Original Scooter Pies are, they are chocolate – covered marshmallow sandwich cakes that are very flavorful.
In the world of snack cakes, I have always thought that Scooter Pies were some of the best such treats sold in America. As I got older, I guess my tastes and priorities changed and I stopped eating them and / or maybe they were just very hard to find at food retailers. Whatever the case, I was very glad to see Scooter Pies at Walgreens the other night and did not hesitate in buying a two – pack of them. When I got home that night, the Original Scooter Pies did not last very long. I tried to save them until the next day, but my sweet cravings made me give in and I ate the two Scooter Pies within a couple of hours of arriving at home.
I must say, I was so impressed with the flavor, price, texture and overall quality of this item, that I decided to write a product review of it. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s product review of The Original Scooter Pie snack cake.
Size
The net weight of the two – pack of Origial Scooter Pies is 2.4 ounces (68.0 grams). The two snack cakes in this package are approximately the same size as many other types of snack cakes. When I opened the package, I ate one of the Scooter Pies right away and tried to put off eating the other one until the next day, but I couldn’t do it. As soon as I finished eating dinner, I just had to eat the other one. In physical size, the package of Original Scooter Pies is slightly larger than many other types of snack cakes.
Packaging
The Original Scooter Pies are packaged on a cardboard – type of sleeve that helps to keep their shape intact. The sleeve is then packaged in a metal – paper – type of wrapper that is very aesthetically – pleasing. The color of the wrapper is what initially attracted me to the display of these snack cakes. This wrapper is colored a very nice shade of blue that is very close in hue to Sky Blue. In Navy Blue lettering on the front label, are the large words “Scooter Pie” and an illustration of the enclosed snack cakes. All relevant nutritional information is also printed on the back label of the Original Scooter Pie package.
Texture
The texture of The Original Scooter Pie is pleasant and appealing. While these snack cakes are indeed soft, they are also firm enough to offer a sense of bite. The crumbly cake, or cookie part of this treat is accentuated by the fluffy marshmallow filling and delicious chocolate coating, creating a very satisfying snack cake.
Nutritional Facts
The Original Scooter Pie contains 130 calories, with 30 calories from fat, per one pie (34 grams) serving. This product also contains 2.5 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 3.5 grams total fat, 0 mg of cholesterol, 110 mg of sodium, 23 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 11 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein.
Taste / Flavor
The Original Scooter Pie features a one – of – a – kind flavor that is very satisfying. Through the years, I have eaten many other types and brands of chocolate – covered marshmallow cakes, but none have tasted as good as the Original Scooter Pie. To me, these snack cakes contain just the right amount of sweetness and are not at all cloying. Overall, the combination of flavors in this product form a very satisfying snack cake.
Price
The retail price that I paid for one two – pack of Original Scooter Pies at a West Hartford, Connecticut Walgreens Pharmacy two nights ago was $.99c. Considering the fact that most similarly – sized packages of other brands of snack cakes regularly retail for at least $1.29 apiece, I think that this price is very reasonable.
Availability
Since I have only recently seen The Original Scooter Pie once, at Walgreens Pharmacy, I cannot state the availability of this product at other retailers. I would imagine, however, that if they are stocked and sold at Walgreens, they have to be stocked and sold at other retailers across America.
Overall Rating
All things considered, The Original Scooter Pie is a delicious snack cake that is very reasonably – priced. Always a delight to eat, these chocolate – covered snack cakes are highly recommended by this food writer.
