Old CD Dream Catcher

Are you fond of Native American artwork, wall hangings and similar décor? Many people are. Those types of things can be mighty expensive if you go out and purchase them but many Native American décor pieces can be easily made by the average person. Even still, you’d think you’d have to spend a good bit of cash on things required to do the project but that’s not true. Some Native American décor pieces can be made by using ordinary things a person might have around the house. Take a CD. We all have ones we don’t use, or that are covered with scratches, and one of those CD’s can easily become a dream catcher you’ll love to display!

Hold a nail with a pair of pliers and hold the pliers with a potholder. Heat the nail and use it to poke holes in the CD. Poke one at the very top of the CD, three across the bottom, and one on each side. The one on the top should align with the center hole at the bottom.

Decide on the look you want for the CD you can paint it then mount a square, Native American picture. Or, you can cover the entire disk with fabric that has a Native American theme. If you glue fabric on, use a needle or similar object to poke a hole in the fabric where the holes are on the CD.

At the top, thread a piece of twine or strip of leather through the hole and tie the ends in a knot. This will be the hanger for the dream catcher. Glue the quill of a feather to the hole area so that the feather protrudes out to the left. Glue another feather on so that it sticks out to the right. The two quills can be covered by a large bead.

On one side of the CD, thread a piece of twine or leather through the hole and bring the ends together. Slide a bead onto the ends and push it all the way up by the hole. Apply a little hot glue to the quill of a feather – or two – and slide them into the bottom area of the bead. Allow these to hang off the side of the new dream catcher. Do the same to the opposite side.

Thread a piece of leather or twine through the center hole at the bottom of the CD. Bring the ends together, slide on a bead, then glue a couple of feathers into the hole at the bottom of the bead. Do the same to the other two holes.

You can create different looks by the colors of the feathers and beads you use as well as how you arrange them. Make a dream catcher that has feathers hanging long from the bottom center but a little shorter on each side of it. Or, make a different one that has all three bottom feather arrangements hanging and looking exactly the same.

The CD dream catcher allows you to use up some of those old CD’s while you create a beautiful new Native American piece for your home. Make several; you know you have even more unwanted CD’s!
