PICKS

The Jets obviously feel good enough about their overall team depth to trade up for each of their first two picks. They moved up 11 slots in the 1st round to get S DARRELLE REVIS at #14. He is a nice value pick. He is ideally a cover-2 corner, but has the tools to be solid in any system. He also has the versatility to be a standout safety. Experience as a punt returner doesn’t hurt. Revis is all but a lock to become a long-term contributor for a team in need of a shut-down cornerback.

New York moved up in the 2nd round for the third year in a row {Clemens in ’06 and Nugent in ’05}, this time jumping 16 places. Their prize was DAVID HARRIS, a big 3-4 MLB that the Jets have been looking for. His forte is stopping the inside rush with power and determination. He scooted up the charts after the Combine where he ran a 4.52 40 yard dash. The Jets gave up a lot to get him, but I think it was a good decision for a team on the come.

In the 6th round they landed tackle JACOB BENDER, a client of small school sleeper scout Joe Linta. Bender is 6’6″and moves well. He is raw, with plenty of upside. A good pick.

WR CHANSI STUCKEY was a steal in the 7th round. I had him valued in the late 4th round in a year so deep with ends. He is deadly in the open field. Could and should stick as a slot receiver.

PRIORITY COLLEGE FREE AGENTS

S LEONARD PETERS is a sleeper of mine. He has very good size. A potential outside linebacker. Very tough and motivated. Peters benches almost twice his weight. His big problem is staying healthy. He has broken, torn, bruised or sprained nearly his whole body. After sitting out a year after high school, he was a medical red-shirt freshman. Then last year he was grant a 6th year of eligibility due to medical hardship. Whew! He will be a 25 year old rookie. A native of Samoa, Peters is still learning to speak English. He has fought through a lot and kept on coming. The talent is there.

A college nose tackle at 6’3″, 298#, MIKE DeVITO is listed as a defensive end on the Jets roster. A strong run stopper. Long shot.

G ROBERT TURNER was signed after being cut early by the Cowboys. Missed the Combine. Very tough. Very aggressive. Very motivated. Great character. Could be a keeper in the right system.

SUMMARY

With the resurgence of NT Dwayne Robertson at the end of the season, the Jets need at NT lost priority. Otherwise, they managed to land studs at their two most pressing need positions, CB and MLB. They gave up a lot in trading up for their prizes, but picked well with their four choices. The free agent group isn’t very promising.
