New Movie Releases September 2009

Love Happens, New Movie Releases

It seemed like we were in a movie dark ages for awhile, with only a few blockbusters being released among heaps of distinctly mediocre films. This autumn, though, our theaters are being flooded with compelling cinema again. September 2009 movie releases include a wide variety of movies, and should have something for everyone. Here are a few notable movies being released this September.

Dorian Gray
Based on the novel by Oscar Wilde, this deliciously dark and decadent film stars Ben Barnes (you may recognize him from Stardust, Easy Virtue, and Prince Caspian) and Colin Firth (most famous for playing Mr. Darcy in both Pride and Prejudice and the Bridget Jones films).

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs
This family film is based on the popular children’s book of the same name. It should be a fun animated romp that children will enjoy.

Fame
A remake of the classic 1980 film of the same name, this Fame film looks to be another singing and dancing extravaganza at a New York Performing Arts School. It promises to star a lot of young talent. I hope that it can match the emotional depth that made the original a classic. Every child of the 80s will want to see this, and the new High School Musical generation should want to watch it to.

The Informant
This tense drama starring Matt Damon (famous for the Bourne Trilogies and Ocean films) is based on the true story of a mentally ill genius who was a major industry whistleblower and FBI informant, but also involved in fraud himself. Not the most thrilling movie, but expect great acting from Damon.

The Soloist
Starring Robert Downey Jr. (star of Iron Man) and Jamie Foxx (famous from TV shows In Living Color and The Jamie Foxx Show). This compelling drama is the story of an unexpected friendship between a columnist (Downey) and a homeless man (Foxx). Foxx plays an amazingly talented musician, but both men have demons to face as they struggle to help each other.

All About Steve
It’s another romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock (of Speed, While You Were Sleeping, etc.). Bullock plays a cross-word puzzle creator who stalks her dream man. Mayhem ensues. It looks like it will be entertaining enough while you’re watching it, but not particularly memorable.

Surrogates
Bruce Willis stars in this science fiction adventure based on a comic book series. The basic premise is that at some point in the future, humans stay isolated and safe in their homes, and surrogate robots interact with the real world for them. Willis must investigate murders, save the world, the usual. It looks like a big adventure, but don’t expect it to live up to his previous movies like Fifth Element.

Some of the other films coming out in September include: District 9, Monty Python: Almost the Truth, 500 Days of Summer, Love Happens, Bright Star, Jennifer’s Body, Coco Before Chanel, and The Other Man.
