Need More Storage? Make a Quick, Easy Inexpensive Closet

How many times have you wished for more closet space? Are your clothes being crushed and needing ironing because there isn’t enough room to hang them? Shoes all jumbled and getting battered because there isn’t space to arrange them? But there just aren’t enough closets in the house, apartment or dorm and not enough storage.

How about making a closet? You can create a spacious closet with storage for shoes, hanging clothes. You’ll have room for boxes, purses, accessories, ties, and lots more.

You can create a closet in about 15 minutes with these simple supplies, available in the home fashions section of any retail store. These items are inexpensive. The whole project can cost as little as $10- $20, depending upon whether you want the closet enclosed or open.

The first step is to find an area between two walls, no more than 8 feet across. This can also be an area between a wall and a tall piece of furniture, like a china cabinet, tall dresser, etc. This can be in any room or basement.

This works especially well in the older homes with all sorts of odd shaped rooms, which are the result of sloped roofs, dormers, chimneys and all the wonderful angles found in old houses.

If you simply cannot find any such area, you can purchase a free standing closet for around $20 as well.

You will then need:

*two wide tension bars which can be adjusted to size

*one fabric shower curtain

*one set of shower curtain hooks (plastic rings are fine but if you like metal hooks which are more decorative, you can find them for $2 / dozen at Family Dollar or Dollar General)

*one hanging canvas shoe holder with ten slots

*several plastic three drawer carts if desired

To make the bar larger simply twist both end to ‘unscrew’ it to the length you need. The rubber tips at both ends should fit very snugly between the side walls, but the rod should not bow out.

Suspend the bar at least 8 inches from the back wall at a height that you can comfortably reach. This will allow clothing to hang freely. Hang your clothes on plastic hangers. The bar should hold about 30- 40 lightweight garments. If the bar slides down the wall, release more of the bar, or remove some clothes.

Hang the second rod in the same manner. This will be the door of your closet. When clothes are hung, the second bar should be far enough from the clothes to enclose them but not touch them. Push the hooks through the slits on the shower curtain. Shower curtains are pretty uniform so this process is quick. Hang the curtain from the bar.

Hang the canvas shoe holder in the middle of the closet, to balance weight. Slide shoes in with tops together. Toe to heel and heel to toe is the best way to keep them. The optional carts are for all the accessories. Label each drawer: hats, belts, purses, etc. Hang scarves and ties.

This was a great project for the kids and I and it was quick easy and inexpensive!
