Need Help with Groceries? Angel Food Ministries Can Help

There are quite a few people in this country who need help with groceries. With the price of food increasing over the years, it’s sometimes hard for low or even middle income families and seniors to afford the amount of groceries needed to get through a few weeks, let alone a whole month. There are even more people who don’t know what kind of help that they can get from their community, simply because they rely on the government to send them money and pray that it will cover the cost of the essential needs from month to month. But sometimes help from the government isn’t always enough, especially to a single mother with two or three children who isn’t able to work or simply can’t afford child care long enough to find a job. Everybody worries about how they are going to pay their doctors, bills, and most importantly, food for the children. I may not have the information to help pay bills or your doctor’s bills, but I do have information on how to get help with groceries. It’s called Angel Food Ministries.

This is a non-profit organization that has helped over 500,000 families afford food since February 1994. Angel Food works with community organizations and churches in over 32 states to help ease the cost of groceries for people who need it. What happens is they give a menu for each month containing enough items to fill up a medium sized box. Each menu is different each month, and everything on the menu you can get for just around $25 plus tax in some states. They also have a “special” for every month. If you buy the menu you can choose a “special” that contains meat, such as steaks, pork, and chicken for just $18. This quantity can feed just one person for about a month and a family of 3 for about two or three weeks. The menus consist of frozen vegetables, chicken breasts, frozen meats, fruit, eggs, canned goods, and even desserts! These items are of the same quality that you would see in a grocery store. You’re probably thinking you have to qualify or fill out lengthy applications, well, you don’t, and there’s no limit to the number of units or specialty boxes you can buy.

Now you’re wondering where to go to get it and how to pay for it. More than likely a local church will host this program and you will have to call or make a trip to the church to order your unit and then pay by check, cash, or food stamps. The host will then call in the order to the main office in Monroe, Georgia and within several more days, Angel Food will deliver the orders on a predetermined date for you to pick them up. Most host sites don’t deliver like a pizza shop does. You are urged to be there on Distribution Day to pick up your order with your own boxes or baskets to fill up. Distribution Day is when volunteers and people of the church or host site come together to set up, clean, fill people’s boxes and baskets, help the elderly, and share the joy of helping others when they truly need it the most.

For the volunteers, this is a long day, for families in need, this is a short but well appreciated trip, and perhaps the best day of the month for both parties. While the joy of giving is exciting, the excitement of getting help is overwhelming. Help spread the word to people you know that could use some help. Ask if your church would be willing to participate if they aren’t already. To know more you can check out the supporting sites.
