NCAA Tournament Recap – Butler Vs. Pittsburgh

If you were watching the Butler vs. Pittsburgh game during the second round of the NCAA Tournament, there were a few things happening at the end of the game that just had me scratching my head, but one of the things that really had me scratching my head happened after the game when the analysts on TBS were reviewing that crazy finish.

To give a quick recap, Butler was losing by one point with seven seconds left before Butler center Andrew Smith took a pass and converted his lay up for the bucket to give the Butler Bulldogs a 70-69 lead with just over two seconds left. As Pitt inbounded the ball, Butler’s Shelvin Mack, who up to that point was having a great game with 30 points, fouled Pitt’s Gilbert Brown near half court with roughly 1.4 seconds left in the game. Brown made the first of his two free throws, but missed the second. As Butler star Matt Howard grabbed the rebound and tried to heave a desperation shot, he was fouled by Pitt’s Nasir Robinson. With the score tied at 70, Howard made the first free throw, then missed the second on purpose as Butler escaped with a 71-70 win over the number one seed Pittsburgh Panthers.

As if those two stupid fouls weren’t enough, I then had to listen to the post game analysis on TBS with Seth Davis, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Saint Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli. Obviously they need a mediator for that crew, because no one would shut up. It was just four people trying to talk over each other. Throughout the post game analysis, Seth Davis kept saying that he would hate to be a coach, before he tossed up this gem, “Don’t be a coach, if anything, be a Chilean Miner.” Now I know I’ve said my fair share of stupid things, but that was pretty brutal. TBS needs to get their act together and get control of that studio, and Seth Davis needs to think next time he tries to make a joke. Come on Seth, you’re better than that!
