Mother’s Day Scriptures of Encouragement and Faith

Older Mothers, Proverbs 31

Offer faith, hope, and encouragement that is everlasting through inspirational Scriptures for Mother’s Day. The following Mother’s Day Scriptures are appropriate for use in cards, letters, gifts, flowers, and to sit down and share with your mother.

These Mother’s Day Scriptures may offer a convenient segue into a deep and meaningful conversation with your mother. They are appropriate for use in Sunday School and can be used to teach children about the holy calling of motherhood and the respect due mothers. Pastors may find these Biblical references a good point of inspiration for the message they will deliver on Mother’s Day.

Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This does not mean that the woman who cowers in a corner is the one who will be praised. On the contrary, a mother filled with the Holy Spirit will have boldness, confidence and peace that is beyond earthly understanding.

This verse also reminds us that beauty is skin deep, and gifts can be shallow. A faithful and strong mother will find her strength in the Lord.

She girds herself with strength, and strengthens herself daily. She perceives that her provision for her family is good: she does not retire early but works diligently to see to the needs of her family, she is not an idle woman. Proverbs 31:17, 18, 27

This may not be a popular Scripture, but we all know it is true. Regardless of whether a mother stays home and works, or works in the labor force, she works for one reason, to assist with the needs of her family. Did you have any idea that was Scriptural? It doesn’t trump the mother’s first responsibility to God, her husband, and family, but it is an important aspect of motherhood that cannot be ignored.

Whether we work away from home or in the home, our work is to be diligent and in the best interests of our families, not ourselves. I believe if you ask older mothers who have been through many trials and tribulations of life and childrearing they will affirm the importance of directing attention to the spiritual, physical, and mental wholeness of the family.

The undiluted truth, according to Scripture, that those who have life experience under their belt are to train and assist younger women in the process of family and motherhood. Young mothers must have godly guidance, as encouraged in Psalms 1, especially in a world rife with humanistic leanings away from spiritualism.

The following Scripture affirms this truth.

That they may teach the young women to be vigilant, to love their husbands, to love their children children. Titus 2:4

Additional Scripture that emphasizes the importance of a wife and mother’s role follows.

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. Proverbs 31:10,11

The value of a virtuous woman, a woman of integrity, of truth, and character is most valuable to a husband and her children. Such a woman provides stability, comfort, and trust. These qualities are important for the healthy development of children, and the husband-wife relationship. The husband and children of a virtuous wife and mother do not have to worry whether she will be there for them, care for their needs, love them unconditionally, and accept them no matter what life brings.

The value of this verse in the life of a mother cannot be underestimated. Were this to be the foundation of more homes, the basis of living as a mother, focused on her family, families would be healthier emotionally and spiritually. These are the foundations upon which young lives are built that will not fall.

A mother who builds her family and blesses her children with a strong spiritual foundation King Solomon had the following to say:

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also praises her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but you excel them all. …She will be rewarded with the fruit of her own hands; and because of her works and deed she will be praised in public places. Proverbs 31:28-29, 31

There is no greater honor than to be considered a virtuous mother. It is the title of greatest honor that can be bestowed on any mother.
