Happy May 28th!

May 28th is a special holiday. In fact, every day’s a holiday for someone and for some reason.

Although we may not know the origins of many of these holidays, avid celebrants will participate eagerly in marking May 28th as a most special day for so many different reasons.

Amnesty Day

May 28th is Amnesty Day, proclaimed by Amnesty International, to celebrate the organization’s 1961 founding. As a holiday, Amnesty Day is aimed at raising public awareness of human rights issues worldwide. Human injustices, such as torture and unfair incarcerations, are the focus of this organization and this holiday.

Feast of Zerowork

Based on several ancient civilizations’ traditions of a season of jubilee (when slaves were freed, debts forgiven, and labor recessed), the Feast of Zerowork is held on May 28th.

Couch potatoes are in their prime on May 28th, as others join their idleness. After all, it’s the Feast of Zerowork.

Hamburger Day

“Do you want fries with that?”

The end of May signals the start of outdoor grilling season, and hamburgers are the hallmark of al fresco dining. On May 28th, Hamburger Day, folks everywhere fire up their barbecues to cook up delicious burgers with unlimited toppings.

Hamburger Day actually has quite a somber origin. On May 28, 1969, after two weeks of intense combat, American troops in Vietnam pulled back from Ap Bia Mountain (Hill 937), which later became known as “Hamburger Hill” for all the casualties suffered there.

Notable Anniversaries on May 28th

The Sierra Club, a worldwide environmental conservation organization, was founded in San Francisco, California, on May 28, 1892.

On May 28, 1898, Secundio Pia produced the first photograph of the Shroud of Turin at the Turin Cathedral.

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill, adding the phrase “under God” to the American Pledge of Allegiance, on May 28, 1954.
