Matt Hamill might not sound familiar to you, but to anyone who watches UFC Matt Hamill will always be a favorite of mine and a lot of other people’s. Matt Hamill is an American Ultimate Fighter who has overcome many obstacles in his life and has proven to everyone that even though he might have some physical setbacks, that does not mean he is going to quit. Also, Matt Hamill is one of my favorite Ultimate Fighters because he is an Ohio native, born and raised in Southern Ohio.
Matt Hamill was born October 5, 1976 in a little town called Loveland, Ohio which is about 25 minutes east of Cincinnati, Ohio. Matt Hamill has two nicknames, “The Golden Boy” and “The Hammer” and mainly fights with the Greco-Roman and free-style wrestling techniques and he also uses a lot of wrestling moves during his fights. Matt Hamill was a three time NCAA Division-Three National Champion in wrestling while he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. Matt Hamill is very unique and loved by many people because he was born deaf, and had to learn growing up how to deal with life and people without being able to hear what they asked of him or what they wanted. Being deaf might be a setback to a lot of people, but to Matt Hamill that was all the more reason to make something of himself, to let people see that being deaf does not mean you have to give up the things in life you want to accomplish. He participated in the Deaf Olympics in 2001, where he took home both gold and silver medals, showing even more proof that he has overcome challenges that he has faced and it really is inspirational. Matt Hamill was married to a deaf women, but has since divorced from her but he also has a child from that relationship who does not have hearing impairments. Matt Hamill is a real classy guy because he works with the hearing impaired community and helps by volunteering his time to children who are deaf.
You might remember Matt Hamill from the reality fighting show, the Ultimate Fighter, he was on the third season of the hit television show, where he trained under Tito Ortiz. Matt Hamill was on his way to the top on the show, but injuries had forced him to drop from the semi-final competition, but I knew that would not be the last of Matt Hamill because he ended up going to the finale where he faced fellow competitor Jesse Forbes and won by knock out. Matt Hamill had just won The Ultimate Fighter season three show, which guaranteed him a contract into the Ultimate Fighting Championships and Matt was on his way to the top of the league. Matt then won by unanimous decision against Seth Petruzelli in October 2006, and then UFC 68 he fought Rex Holman and again won by a knockout in the first round. A controversial fight that Matt Hamill was in was the UFC 75 which was hosted in London, England and his opponent was none other than U.K.’s own Michael Bisping. This fight was a loss for Matt by split-decision and it was considered controversial because most of the American fans of the show thought Matt Hamill should have won. It was thought a rematch would occur between Bisping and Hamill but due to Hamill needing surgery and Bisping moving out of the weight-class, the rematch looks like it will not happen after all. Hamill then won against Tim Boetsch in the second round by a knockout, and then fought another Cincinnati, Ohio native Rich Franklin, but ended up getting taken out in the third round by a severe kick in the stomach. UFC 92 was a fight between Matt Hamill and Reese Andy which proved another win for Hamill by knock out, and then he fought Mark Munoz in UFC 96 where he also delivered another painful knockout to his opponent. Matt Hamill was due to fight in UFC 102 but because he needed surgery on his knee, he dropped from the card, but is looking for more wins after he is done healing from the surgery.
I like Matt Hamill a lot because I think he shows a lot of heart by never giving up and never letting his personal struggles get in the way of winning and making something out of himself. Matt seems like a really great guy, and he seems really involved in the community and he also inspires me to want to be a better person. Matt Hamill never looks for pity or sympathy and expects people to fight him with no less than 100 percent and he gives no less than 100 percent to his opponents. Matt Hamill is a guy who has overcome adversity to prove that you really can be anything you want to be, and that physical limitations do not mean you should give up or stop trying, but to open your eyes and heart to let other people learn from, although, it does make it nice, it is about Matt Hamill the fighter, the volunteer and the community activist. Matt Hamill might be deaf, but he is not dumb and he really is excellent at wrestling and knocking opponents out cold. I like Matt Hamill the most out of all of the fighters because I see he has heart and he has the self-discipline when it comes to making something happen that he wants.
