Making a Square Diaper Cake for Triplets

Diaper Cakes

A diaper cake is one of the trendiest and most popular baby shower gifts of 2008. Many flower and gift shops will create the cakes, but many consumers do not know that you can create the cakes yourself with these simple instructions for a fraction of the cost.

Traditional diaper cakes are round, and have three tiers. The diapers can be removed, and in their place there is space for shirts, Onesies, pants, and other little gifts like rattles, bottles and sippy cups.

A diaper cake for triplets can be round, square or any shape that you like, with the proper shaping you could even make it into a heart, star as the diapers are pliable, and once the elastics are around the diapers they can be formed to any shape that you desire.

To begin, we are going to make the diaper cake in the shape of a square with four layers, this way, the diapers are going to last at least a couple of weeks, with three infants. This cake is going to made with infant diapers, that way, the cake can come into use not only as a focal point at the shower, or in the nursery, but can be used as soon as the infants are born.

Begin the diaper cake by rolling the diapers with the front of the diaper towards the inside, this will ensure that no diapers are ruined in the process. Although a decorative cake, or centerpiece, the diapers should be completely usable after the cake is dismantled. Having glue or elastics within the inside of the diaper could tear the material, which will ruin the diaper. Once the diaper has been rolled, secure it with elastic around the center of the diaper.

Once the diapers are rolled it is time to make the layers of the cake. Since we are making a square diaper cake, we are going to make bunches of four diapers. These will form the basic square shape of the diaper. For the bottom layer of the cake we are going to use eight diapers, or twenty bunches of four. Secure the diapers together first, in groups of four, than use the larger elastics to secure those groups of four to each other. Finally, once the layer has been complete use large elastic to secure the outer edge of the layer. If it does not feel strong enough, two elastics can be used.

Repeat this process with the second, third and fourth layer of the cake. Each of the cake layers should be gradually smaller, and fit atop one another. Use wooden dowels, or sticks, to hold the layers in place. You may have to use a couple of sticks per each layer since this is going to be a larger diaper cake for triplets.

After the layers have been secured it is time to put the finishing touches on the cake such as ribbon around the outside, a cake board on the bottom, and the finishing touches on top. The cake can be wrapped in decorative cellophane for delivery. Voila, the large diaper cake for triplets is complete!
