Make Your Own Rave Clothing

Head Scarf

We all know that fashion trends come and go. While some clothes may seem outdated, it shouldn’t be surprising that these same clothes may come back in style one day.

When I think of rave clothing, I think of the 90s. Here, I’m going to provide you with some tips to make your own rave clothing, guaranteeing that your style will be unique to others. When you make your own clothes, they never go out of style!

First you have to examine your own taste. Do you prefer to be comfortably or flashy? Rave clothing is generally bright and over-the-top, so I’ll provide you with a look that allows you to be both comfortable AND stylish. Remember, raves are for dancing, so you will sweat a lot.

What You Need:

White Tube Top or Tank Top (or White Cotton Tee)
Old Jeans or Old Jean Skirt
Comfy Boots (that you don’t mind getting scuffed or dirty)
Scissors

Materials for Tie-Dye-

RIT Powder (Pick 2-3 colors of your liking)
Rubber or Plastic Gloves
Measuring Spoons/Cups
Squirt Bottles
Rubber Bands
Dust Mask
Bucket (2)

Optional:

Bright-Colored Leggings or Fishnets
Glow-in-the-Dark Body Paint
Head Scarf (preferably a BRIGHT material/color)

*All of these materials can be bought cheaply at craft stores or stores like Walmart, Kmart, etc. If you don’t have the clothes mentioned, try and make do with what you have.*

First, you have the option of tie-dying your shirt, your jeans or jean skirt, or both. While tie-dyed jeans are probably the most unique, if you want to preserve the quality of your denim, stick to dying your shirt. The dying process should only take about 30 minutes.

*This tie-dye is of a marble design. To pick your own design, look online to see the variations. Otherwise, the instructions for tie-dying are very much similar.*

Set aside an area where you’re free to make a mess (like outside,) or make sure to cover the area with newspaper. Lay your shirt and/or denim out flat on your work surface. Scrunch your t-shirt into a tight ball. Use a strong rubber band to tie around the center of the scrunched t-shirt, making sure the t-shirt is still in a ball-shape. Use a second rubber band to tie around the shirt, intersecting the first rubber band (so the bands resemble the ties on a parcel box, one vertical one horizontal.) Continue using rubber-bands to tie the shirt up, until there are no loose corners of the shirt hanging out.

Mix the RIT dye powder in the bucket, according to directions on container. Put your scrunched t-shirt into the bucket of dye for about 20 minutes. Make sure the t-shirt is submerged as much as possible. After 20 minutes, rinse the shirt in a sink (preferably a big, basement sink if you have one.) Dip the shirt into the second dye color for about 20 minutes. Rinse. (Repeat for third color if you have it.) Take off the shirt’s rubber bands. Examine your finished product. If you feel it needs more color, repeat the tying of rubber bands, dying and rinsing. Let the shirt dry. (Some prefer to wash it before wearing it, but make sure you wash it alone, incase the colors run.)

Next, if you decided not to dye your denim, perhaps you could rip your jeans or add sparkle to a denim skirt by rolling them in glitter or fastening sequins to the back in a design of your choice. If you still choose to leave your denim alone, look for a cheap pair of bright-colored fishnets or leggings, which you also could tear up to your liking. If you want to have your legs bare, try glow-in-the-dark body paint, in which you can paint designs on yourself that will stand out in a rave but not in daylight. You also could purchase some bright-colored material from a craft store, and cut it up to make a head scarf; I assure you, you won’t want to wear your hair down at a rave.

Lastly, I guarantee wearing flip flops or heels to a rave is a bad idea. You’re going to be dancing, so comfort is key, and sandals will fly off your feet too easily. With a pair of comfy boots (think combat boots, not winter boots or boots with fleece material,) your feet will be protected, plus with boots that give your shins some leg-room, you can place belongings like money, a cell phone, or camera, without having to worry about carrying it around and/or losing it.

Enjoy!
