I’ve seen lovely dolls and stuffed animals made this way and depending on the size, people were paying from $25 to $100 for them. When you make yours, why not try selling them at a flea market, consignment shop or a swap meet. If you do this around Christmas time you could probably make even more.
Sewing Emblems And Letters
This is idea if you happen to have the sewing machines that can be programmed to do emblems and letters. It will make your work faster and easier. Then you can start your own business sewing emblems and letters for high schools and high school sports teams, and other businesses in your community that need letters or emblems on shirts or uniforms.
Why not offer your services to a store that sells sporting goods, or pass out fliers or send brochures directly to the places you know need this service. Once you become known as someone who does this type of service, you can reasonable expect to make several thousand dollars a year.
Starting A Mending Service
People who know anything at all about sewing can do mending. If this is what you want to do, then start by advertising your services with a small ad placed in your local paper or shopper’s guide. Let them know that you do patching, mending and any other repairs on clothing that might need it. Also let them know that you do quality work, then list your phone number.
When you start to get clients, set your price according to the difficulty and the amount of items you need to mend, as well as what type of item needs mending. However you charge, it should average to be at least minimum wage per hour or a little more. You can reasonably expect to make at least $150 dollars per week.
Offer Your Sewing Services To Dry Cleaners
Another way to start your own sewing service business is to offer your services to your local dry cleaners. Let them know that you can do alterations, mend, and replace zippers.
You should have a price list, order blanks and business cards made up for this. Then you can leave them with the dry cleaners. If they need a seamstress or their seamstress has more than they can handle, then your services will come in handy. Do a good job for your customers and you are guaranteed to get repeat business. This is perfect for someone who is home and wants to start their own sewing business, because this is basically a full time job. Depending on how many items you make a week and the time and effort, you could possibly make as much as $300 dollars a week
Sewing Rugs
Draw a pattern that you like on either burlap or canvas. These materials make excellent backings for rugs. When you have the pattern you like, just wind the yarn you have chosen around the guide and stitch it onto your material.
Your rugs will be your original creations that you can sell at art shows, flea markets, consignment shops or swap meets. If you put quality into the rugs, and your customers like your products, you can expect to make at least $200 per week, with the possibility of getting repeat customers.
Sewing Custom Curtains And Drapes
The possibilities in sewing custom curtains and drapes is unlimited. Put an ad in your local paper advertising your service. Give them your phone number and let them know you also give free estimates.
Your prices should be within the same price range as retail curtains and drapes, but made with better material and better quality. Get fabric samples from a few wholesale fabric companies so you will have fabric samples to show you potential clients. Once you become established, it would be easy to make at least $500 per week.
