Maine Crime Briefs: Former Hells Angel Leader Gets 55 Years in Ex-Girlfriend Shooting Death

Auburn – Daniel Roberts has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend Melissa Mendoza on Aug.15, 2005. Roberts who is a former Hells Angels leader told the court that he had been “deeply sorry” regarding the death of Mendoza. According to police, Roberts shot Mendoza in the head after a bitter custody battle over their two year-old daughter Savanna. Jurors that convicted Roberts stated that he lured Mendoza to his house,and as soon as she walked into Roberts garage he shot her. Roberts never agreed to that scenario, reports The New York Times Company.

Ellsworth – Dorothy Cook, 49, who plead guilty to manslaughter in March has been sentenced to serve four years in prison for the death of Benedict Starbuck, 23. Cook who was driving under the influence, rear-ended Starbuck’s car at a speed of 70 mph. Starbuck who was transported to the hospital after the crash, died a few hours later. According to the police, Cook’s blood alcohol level was 0.30, four times the legal limit. With the four years in prison, Cook was also ordered to serve four years probation as well as 200 hours of community service, reports the Bangor Daily News.

Presque Isle – Heather Fortin, 23, is being charged with manslaughter in the death of 20 month-old Teairra Leathers who had been in her care on June 18, 2007. According to authorities, Fortin called 911 at 6:46 p.m. stating that Leathers had been unresponsive. After transporting the baby to Eastern Maine Medical Center, Leathers died the next day. The medical examiner’s office concluded that her injuries were not that caused by a fall and ruled the baby’s death a homicide. Fortin has changed her story numerous times according to police. Fortin is also denying that she had anything to do with the baby’s death, reports The New York Times.

Fairfield – Waterville Deputy Police Chief Joseph Massey is wondering how five USPS money orders showed up at the police station issued in his name. Each of the money orders are all official, made out for $950.00 dollars each. According to the police chief there was no forwarding address or note that accompanying the money orders. Massey told the Morning Sentinel “I know it’s tempting to cash them, but folks should really make sure they are legitimate.

Augusta – Phillip M.Urguhart, 42, has been charged with terrorizing, criminal threatening, and reckless conduct. The incident in which he is charged with stems from April 20th, when Urguhart allegedly went into a Wal-Mart with a 9-mm gun or a 380 caliber and put nine people in jeopardy by waving it around. According to the police, Urguhart had been depressed that his wife had recently left him. At this time Urguhart is being held without bail in the Kennebec County Jail reports the Morning Sentinel.

Ellsworth – Steven Rowley, 33, has been charged with drug and weapon charges that stem from a bust that was made in his home on Thursday night. According to police, the bust operation seized, 200 marijuana plants, an ounce of cocaine, 740 units of illegal prescription drugs that included oxycodone, methadone, and hydrocodone. Also seized in the bust were seven guns, and four vehicles. All the vehicles seized will be kept until further investigation. Rowley was taken to the Hancock County Jail and released on $50,000 bond, reports the Bangor Daily News.
