Lincoln, Nebraksa: Home of Capitol Building

Murals

Any family vacation to Lincoln, NE needs a visit to the State Capitol building. Located on K, between 14th and 16th Streets, the State Capitol building is located centrally, as it is the tallest building in Lincoln, can be seen some distance away. The State Capitol building was designed by New York Architect Bertram Grosvenor
Goodhue and was constructed from 1922-1932 and is the second tallest state capital building in the United States.

The Sower Statue

As you drive towards the State Capitol building you will see the nineteen foot tall figure of “The Sower” gracing the dome at the top of the tower. The Sower”, together with the golden dome it rests upon and a Native American depiction of thunder around the drum, represent the weather and agriculture. “The Sower” is also said to
pay homage to Nebraska’s agricultural background and the settlers who created the rich farming background Nebraska boasts.

Exterior Art

Upon arriving at the State Capitol building, you should note the impressive display of carvings on the limestone exterior. The carvings represent the progression of democracy throughout history. There are four courtyards within the base of the building which is shaped as a cross within a square. Take time to admire the exterior
before entering the building.

The Murals

Once inside the State Capitol building, you will immediately notice the murals covering what seems every available space. The murals depict everything from Native Americans, to the pioneers to modern
firefighters, to recognition of the right to establish their own government. Overall, the murals are a fascinating look at Nebraska’s history and what has shaped the state into the social, economic and
political environment it is today.

Judiciary Use

As the State Capitol building is in use there may be various activities present at any point. Nebraska’s Supreme Court meets once a month and hears arguments in the Supreme Court Room. The Governor has his private offices, as well as the Governor’s Hearing Room and the Governor’s Reception Area within the State Capitol Building. While the State Capitol building boasts both an East and West Legislative Chamber, Nebraska has a unicameral government. Each room of the State Capitol building has a unique theme or design element.

A Killer View

For those who are not faint of heart or claustrophobic you can take an elevator ride up the State Capitol building’s observation deck. The observation deck is 250 feet up the 400 foot building. As the State Capitol building is the tallest building in Lincoln the observation deck offers a wonderful look at the city. The city was built on-axis to the State Capitol building and is quite stunning from this height.

For those interested in guided tours through the state capital building tours are offered on the hour during normal building hours. Hours are Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Holidays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m. Please note that the state capital building is not open Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after
Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
