Learn to Surf with Lessons in Hampton, New Hampshire

Surfing

Surfing is fast becoming one of the most popular and trendy sports anywhere. The style, attitude, and fashion are some aspects that have started to draw more and more people to the surf scene. However, with all the good surfers out there, there are even more that are posers, and just trying to look the part. Instead of walking around trying to be something you are not, why not try and learn how to surf through lessons from your local surf school or instructor? You might not think it, but New Hampshire has some of the best surf and best surfers anywhere in the country. The 13.5 miles of coastline has unlimited potential and it’s a great place to learn. If you are trying to learn how to surf, you have a number of options.

The best place to get all your surf gear in all of the seacoast is Cinnamon Rainbows in Hampton. They have everything the aspiring surfer needs to get started, as well as plenty of supplies and outfits. But the real reason to head to Cinnamon Rainbows is because they give great surf lessons. Usually lessons run around $40 for the hour, and will include a wetsuit and a choice of board if you don’t have either for yourself. The shop is within walking distance of perfect beginner waves at the famous Wall in Hampton Beach. The surfers at the shop will take you down to the beach and teach you the basics before you head out into the ocean. You are more likely to get a reservation for a lesson later in the day, so call up the shop and ask for Phil, Dave, Kevin, or Kylie, all accomplished surfers and great teachers. The hours of the shop vary, but they are open during the summer from 9-6, and winter hours are 10-5.

Just down the road from Cinnamon Rainbows in Rye, is the quaint Summer Sessions surf shop. Although it’s much smaller than Cinnamon Rainbows, it has a great selection of clothing and gear, and also does surf lessons. It’s only open in the summer; so make sure you call early as reservations fill up quickly. The price of a lesson is very similar to the other shops, and will probably run around $40. That includes the rental of a board and wetsuit. If you don’t want a lesson, Summer Sessions will rent you a board or wetsuit separately, usually for around $20. Lessons are given across the street at mellow Pirate’s Cove beach, a perfect place to learn. No pipeline waves here. Make sure you ask for Ryan or Tyler. They are both excellent surfers and are well know for their great instruction skills. Hours typically run from 10-6 and the shop is open seasonally from May until the end of September.

Surfing is hitting the scene fast and furious, so don’t be left behind. Grab your local surf start and head over to the shop for some lessons. You’ll be hooked from the get go, and it’s a great way to keep in shape as well as have some fun.
