Lawn Care: How to Get Rid of Grub Worms

Milky Spore

Grub worms are nasty little creatures that can inhabit your lawn and turn it from a fresh green to a horrible brown. Grub worms are little insects that will inevitably destroy your lawn if you do not take care of the problem and can tempt other animals to dig into your lawn. If you think you have a grub problem there are many different ways you can get rid of them and they are all fairly easy.

The first thing you need to do to get rid of a grub problem is to be sure you really have a grub problem. If you see brown patches in your yard and the grass is very spongy and soft, it might be worth it to look under the grass for grubs. When you pull up the grass and see small little white insects that lay on the ground in a “C” shape, then these are grubs and let you know you have a grub problem. If you see more than eight grub worms in a specific location then you know you need to get rid of them as soon as possible to prevent further lawn damage. Most of the time we have a few of these grub worms in our yard but more than eight means you have a grub infestation.

You need to make sure you have removed the grass that has been damaged by the grub worms. Take the grass that you have removed from the damaged areas and roll it up and throw it into the trash. You then need to till or aerate the soil where the damage has occurred, this will help bring any remaining grubs to the surface and help your soil stay healthy. If you see any more grubs you should pick them up and kill them using a shovel or your foot to make sure they will not infect your lawn anymore. Once you have aerated the damaged lawn areas and other areas around the damaged lawn you can then use a pesticide. This pesticide should be specific for getting rid of grub worms, something like Milky Spore. Carefully read the instructions on the pesticide about dosing instructions and how much you add per square foot of damaged soil. Usually it is about two teaspoons for every four square feet of area. If you have a large area that you have a grub problem in, you can use a spreader to spread the grub insecticide around. The use of the pesticide to get rid of the grub worms should be done around June and will only work in the smaller grubs. If you have had the problem for a couple years or you notice a huge grub infestation, you might need to call in a professional with better chemicals and tools.

Once you have spread the pesticide around the damaged area, you then should water the area to make sure the seeds get into the soil. This will help eradicate the grub worms by making the product go deeper into the territory they inhabit. Products like Milky Spore do not want you to use water however, so it is important to read the directions on the box to make sure you are going about the process the right way. You can repeat this process later in the year if you still are experiencing a problem with grubs. As always, when you are using chemicals of any kind make sure you wear gloves and a protective mask. Products like Milky Spore are non-toxic and are the best products to use to get rid of grubs because they do not pose harm to pets, humans or other insects. Try to get a product that is safe and non-toxic because these products are more beneficial and also they only go after the grub worms. You can get products at your local home improvement store or garden center to help you get rid of your grub problem and they cost about 20 dollars.
