Lamb of God’s 10 Best Songs

Lamb of God is a heavy metal band that was created in Richmond, Virginia in the year 1990 under the name “Burn the Priest”. In 1998 they changed their name to “Lamb of God” along with their self titled album. They have since become one of the most popular and well respected American metal bands in the world. They have a unique sound in which many of their songs carry a distinct beat to nod your head to. They also differ from many other metal bands in that their vocals are often easily understandable, making it all the more tractable to scream and growl along with the song.

10. Walk with me in Hell

Off the album Sacrament, “Walk with me in Hell” is the opening track and certainly does not disappoint. This song sets the tempo for the rest of the album with jack hammering drum beats and guitar riffs that take as many twists and turns as a rollercoaster, while the heavy, slower vocals keep it on point. There is something about this song that makes it much more melodic than anything else on the album, and that’s why it has procured the 10th spot.

9. Hourglass

Hourglass is about as predictable as gravity. Throughout much of the song the instruments are on repeat and go through only a few variations. However, these few iterations were masterfully written, and always seem to raise my heart rate, as each subsequent part gets more and more intense.

8. Black Label

Black Label is definitely a song showcasing Randy Blythe the vocalist of Lamb of God. This entire song seems to be focused around him, where in the beginning the instrumentals lead him into a throat wrenching yell. Throughout the song the pace is determined by his vocals, which are a bit different than usual. In addition to the usual low guttural yell Randy seems to have a more broken screaming-yelp quality, which when mixed adds much more uniqueness to the song.

7. 11th Hour

I think as 11th Hour as the sort of defining song for Lamb of God. The drums, bass, and vocals are slow but heavy, with guitar screeches interjecting throughout. This is one of the best “headbanging” and sing-along songs produced by this band.

6. Redneck

Now I know some people might say that Redneck deserves a higher position in this list, but I think that while still good, it has been overhyped and there are a few songs much better. The good things about Redneck is that it is one of the most “punch you in the face” songs I think that Lamb of God has done, the use of heavy drums and bass with Randy’s mean angry vocals make it a song to scare your parents (Not to mention the easily recognizable cursing). Moreover, I think the song’s video also contributed a little to its popularity, because it is humorous. In spite of these things I think Redneck’s major turnoff at least for me is the absence of its guitars. It is a good song with a lot of kick but does not really satisfy the need for an all around heart-attack inducing strain of rage. Therefore it is number 6.

5. Laid to Rest

The thing I like about Laid to Rest is the way it varies its pace and tempo according to the low to high-pitched guitar riffing. The vocals also back everything up nicely, and the whole thing does a good job of going from a slow tap of the foot to an all out head banging session. This is simply one the best guitar songs that they have produced.

4. Ruin

This song is raw plain and simple. It spares no time blasting drums and guitars. The opening is so sudden you may find yourself falling out of your chair. It does not lose any momentum throughout the entire song and continues to beat you to death with its ferocity more than any other Lamb of God song, and possible any metal song. At the end of this you may find yourself panting from exhaustion.

3. Omerta

Omerta was one of the first Lamb of God songs I had heard and will always be one of the best for me. The opening is obviously what makes it unique, Randy Blythe gives a short articulation of honor and law, which then spares no time in crunching into the gritty rumble of the rest of the song. This song comes with all the intensity of a battlefield with guns blaring and artillery kabooming. With the end closing as quickly as it started.

2. Set to Fail

Set to Fail is off Lamb of Gods newest album Wrath and is without a doubt the best song on it. This song is fast and hard-hitting that succeeds in as much utter rage as “Ruin” and as much melody as “Walk with me in Hell”.

1. Descending

Without a doubt this song does not get enough attention and often gets overlooked. This is Lamb of God’s best song by far; it has an aura of pure “epic” about it that is unsurpassed on any other song. It is fast and grinding. Everything is so fast and well meshed together that at the end of the song you will be left speechless and staring of into the distance because of the mind-numbing effect of this song. If you like metal you will like Descending.
