West Hollywood has so many great places to stay at, shop at, and to eat at. Out of all the cities I have been, I must say West Hollywood takes the cake for unique and amazing restaurants. We tried the Opaque, dining in the dark and now it was time to try to famous Ketchup restaurant that I have seen on the MTV show The Hills a few times. I was intrigued by the name of the restaurant and by seeing it on the show. I knew we had to go eat there.
Located at 8590 Sunset Boulevard, Ketchup is another fun and funky place to dine at in California. Outside the word Ketchup is lit up in a neon red light to lure people in. You can definitely see the red glow from outside from this second story restaurant. As you walk into two big glass doors you find a sitting area. The hostess is there to take you to your table when it is ready. Then she takes you into an elevator that takes you to the second floor where the restaurant is.
Inside they went for the upscale look to a modern family diner and it turned out amazing. The chairs, booths, shiny floors and tables are white and the tomato like lights, napkins, and candle holders are red. The combination of the colors together makes the whole atmosphere. There are large windows surrounding you that go from the floor to the ceiling. That really brightens up the place and gives you a beautiful view of Sunset Boulevard and the city, especially at night.
The walls are decorated with many different paintings and collages of ketchup bottles and tomatoes. They are really trendy looking also. On the table there are no flowers, advertisements or anything average like that. Instead in a glass box there is a large red tomato in it. I have to say that is the first time I have seen that on a table for decoration, but it looked cool.
The menu has everything and more that your average diner has. They serve items like mini corndogs, hamburgers, chili, lobster wraps, French fries and so much more. All of the meals come with either regular fries or their wonderful sweet potato fries! You have to try these if you like sweet potatoes! You have your choice of cayenne or garlic seasoning for the fries. The cayenne really spices them up. So if you like hot go for the cayenne. My husband got the garlic and that was a good choice also.
Besides that they also serve items such as Mahi-Mahi, Scallops, and other seafood items. They also have a variety of salads like the Waldorf salad, Cobb salad and BBQ Chicken salad. No matter if you want steak or a chicken dinner, Ketchup has it all. You also must try their lobster mashed potatoes. Yummy! The Chef Chris Tunnel definitely knows what he is doing.
The waiters and waitresses wear white shirts that have tomato splats on the left front side of them. When you order a specialty drink the bartender will come over with a small wheeled cart and mix it in front of you. It makes you feel like you have your own personal bartender. Plus it is cool cause you get to watch them make your drink in an entertaining way.
The restaurant also has five choices of ketchup that you can choose from to use on your food. Being from Wisconsin I always thought there was only one kind of ketchup, tomato and that was it. They had ranch, maple, regular, mango and chipotle flavored ketchups and they were all made from scratch daily. My favorite two were the mango and the ranch. I never thought I would like flavored ketchup, but I am glad that I tried it. They were all pretty good. They give you a little bit of each one with your meal, and you can always ask for more if you need it.
There are big glass doors that lead you to the lounge area. On the doors was painted splattered ketchup. It looked really cool. You can sit back and relax on the big comfortable plush white chairs with small black tables in here and enjoy a before or after dinner drink. It is a very romantic atmosphere in here. The bar top is red with red candles lit on top of it. The bar is surrounded by white bar stools you can also lounge at and have a drink. The bottles behind the bar glow as a red light illuminates off of them. There is also the floor to ceiling windows in here to enjoy the view of the city.
The bar serves a great list of martinis if you like those. They also have an extensive wine list. Otherwise they serve all the mixed drinks and a lot of different choices of beer. If you are a non-drinker they have a great selection of N/A special drinks also. They have drinks that are made with Yoo-hoo the chocolate drink you don’t hear too much about anymore and different kool aids to make them unique and different colors.
This restaurant is great! The prices range from $10 and up. For my husband and I to eat their with a few drinks each it was $120, which isn’t bad at all for the Hollywood area in an awesome restaurant like this. To some it might be a little expensive but I thought it was worth it. So if you get to West Hollywood make sure you check out Ketchup so you can find out for yourself what all the hype is about. They are open for lunch and dinner and it is a good idea to make a reservation.
