Jason Schwartzman’s Side Project: Five of the Best Songs by Coconut Records

Jason Schwartzman

Coconut Records is a California-based indie rock group and the musical project of actor Jason Schwartzman, best known for his roles in movies such as “Marie Antoinette,” “Shopgirl,” and “I Heart Huckabees.” The band is based out of Los Angeles and was formed in 2006, although the only base member is Schwartzman, he often collaborates with other musicians such as Zooey Deschanel, members from the band Incubus, and more. Coconut Records has created some seriously enjoyable tracks. Here is a look at five of the best songs by Coconut Records yet, and see what all the fuss is about.

West Coast”

The first song I ever heard by Coconut Records was “West Coast.” I stumbled upon it when listening to Pandora, and I loved the sound so I decided to look up to see who the artist was. I was stunned when I found out it was Jason Schwartzman. I had heard that he was in a band, but I did not recognize his singing voice. “West Coast” is a great chill out song. It has a mellow vibe, memorable lyrics, and a beat that I can easily nod along to.

Microphone”

Another great song from Coconut Records is “Microphone.” This song has a highly original sound, unique instrumental accompaniment, and is undeniably enjoyable. This quirky sound will be looping on my mp3 player for quite some time to come.

Back To You”

One of my favorite songs by Coconut Records is “Back To You.” The sound produced by this song is what would happen if Weezer and the Beatles got together and created an indie pop song. Seriously. I can definitely hear both of the band’s influences in this song. “Back To You” is a highly enjoyable track that definitely deserves more radio play.

Is This Sound Okay?”

Another solid track by Coconut Records is “Is This Sound Okay?” This song is a bit different than Coconut Records’ other songs, starting off with a seriously mellow vibe, and slowly it builds up to a more moderate tempo. The beat is decent, and that track overall is definitely enjoyable.

Minding My Own Business”

Last, but definitely not least, “Minding My Own Business” is another solid song by Coconut Records. This song is utterly enjoyable to listen to, and I simply cannot help tapping my foot along to the beat. This is probably one of the band’s most commercially appealing song, and definitely deserves more play on the radio.
