Iomega EGo Portable Hard Drive

Hard Drives, Portable Hard Drive

Features

The Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive is a device which can safely store your music, photos, videos and files. If something horrible happens to your computer, your data will be stored on one of these portable hard drives and will be accessible by other computers or by your original computer once it is fixed. This method of securing data has fast become one of the most popular way to make sure your stuff isn’t lost. I recommend that everyone find some way of backing up their data, whether it be an external hard drive or cloud hosting services, or both if you want extra security.

The Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive has several advantages over other external hard drives that make it an excellent choice for storing data. First is the USB 3.0 technology which can increase the transfer speed of data by up to 10x over USB 2.0. It is backwards compatible with 2.0 USB technology, but will get 2.0 transfer speeds. The USB 3.0 technology on this external hard drive is an investment in the future. Depending on when you plan on getting your next computer, there’s a good chance that it will have USB 3.0 ports. So maybe right now you won’t be able to take advantage of the faster transfer speeds because your current computer only has USB 2.0 ports, but in the future you’ll be able to transfer data at lightning fast speeds because your device will have up-to-date technology.

This series of portable hard drives is plug and play, which means there won’t be a terribly involved process to get it working. Just plug it in and the necessary software will install itself automatically. This is a great feature but is nothing special compared to other equally new products. Plug and play has been around for a while. Because it is a portable external hard drive and not a stationary one, no external power supply is needed. Instead of plugging it into the wall, it gets its power through the USB when it is plugged into your computer. This is the rule of thumb for portable hard drives, so while it might not differentiate itself from other portable hard drives, it’s a definite benefit compared to non-portable hard drives.

In terms of how the Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive protects your data, it does so with Drop Guard Xtreme technology. This means it’s extra durable and can withstand drops of up to 7 feet. That is twice the industry average. Not that you’d ever want to put that claim to the test, it’s nice to know that unless you’re Shaquille O’Neal, your data will be safe if you drop it. Another feature which adds to the durability of the hard drive is the Black Power Grip Band. This is a rubber band which crisscrosses the hard drive. It is something with more traction than the metal casing which you can hold onto while carrying it around. It also gives the hard drive a little more grip of any surface that you place it on. Don’t worry about it being pulled off the table by an inquisitive child or accidental tug, because the Black Power Grip Band will keep it in place.

Other than the physical protection the Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive provides, it also does a great job keeping your data safe from people who might try to access it. AES 256-bit Hardware Encryption is built-in data security (for the PC only). It makes it so your data is only accessible once a password is entered. Also, if the hard drive is unplugged, data is completely locked and cannot be accessed at all.

There is also some software which Iomega gives you when you purchase an Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive. With these external hard drives you will get a one-year subscription to Trend Micro Internet Security. This is an Antivirus program which you can install on your computer to keep viruses from hurting your computer and compromising your data. Iomega QuikProtect is software that lets you easily backup information to the external hard drive. Use the software to choose files and folders that you want to be automatically be backed up once it is plugged in and don’t worry about having to remember to do it yourself. MozyHome Online Backup is a service that lets you place data on a server away from your home and completely detached from your computer to be accessed anywhere, anytime. There is a 2GB limit to what they will store for free, if you would like more it can be purchased.
