Instant Cake Mixes Made to Taste HomemadeBaking cakes can be fun and very delicious when you add that special touch to make them taste homemade. My two favorite instant cake mixes to work with are yellow cake mixes and white cake mixes.
Yellow Cake Mixes
There are many things that you can achieve when baking with a yellow cake mix. Many of us already know that you can put spoons full of chocolate cake mix on top of the yellow and swirl it around and you have a marble cake. You can take fruit and get the same effect, yes take fruits like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries etc. chopped them up finely add a bit of water or if you are using the canned fruits for pies do not add any water put scoops across your cake like you would with the chocolate and then swirl it through the cake and bake as usual. You will have a very delicious tasting fruit tasting cake. Even better do you like the taste of maple syrup? Instead of putting the 1/3 cup of oil substitute maple syrup for a maple flavor cake. You can substitute just about any fruit flavoring and get a most delicious cake. Don’t be worried about too much frosting because a yellow cake tastes delicious with peanut butter frosting. Peanut butter is very healthy and it makes a most delicious frosting. Keep your cake moist longer put in a tablespoon of applesauce, reduce your water a bit and bake. This goes well if you want to use as a frosting as well. My kids always liked the crunchy peanut butter frosting. In any case by adding things to the mix you will find lots of good ways to make your cake taste homemade.
White Cake Mixes
White cake mixes are good to bake just as they are but you can use them to make other delicious fruit dishes as well. Crumble up about ¼ cup of butter in your cake mix, your mix should be crumbly not smooth. Then you should put a can of pie filling, your choice of flavors, on the bottom of the baking dish, spread your white crumbled cake mix over the top and bake as usual. You will have a very tasty straddle. All you need to do is choice your fruit mix, in the fall we like to use apple pie filling and mix walnuts and raisins together in the mixture. Peaches are a very good fruit taste to make and the whole family likes our Peachy strudel. Washington’s Birthday calls for the use of cherry pie filling but you can be the judge of what your family may like. In the summer I would bake two layers of white cake mix frost the center with dream whip and put fresh strawberries in the middle. The top I would save to serving time and then I would put cool whip on top with strawberries that had been mixed in the strawberry glaze mixture. This is one of the most delightful cakes that my whole family likes and sometimes I would make it for our summertime church outings. White cake mixes goes very well with fruits if you crumble it up or make the cake mix and add the fruit as a topping later. In the end you have that homemade taste that the whole family enjoys.
