Installing Outdoor Security Lights

Solar Electric

Outdoor security lights are essential to help brighten up the dark spots of the home’s exterior as well as deter would-be intruders. Installing outdoor lights that automatically turn on as the day becomes darker can also help prevent accidents from happening. A do-it-yourselfer familiar with working with electrical wiring can accomplish this project. Hiring a pro will ensure that the installation is successful when you are not familiar with the tasks.

Location

Choose the areas that need more lighting to prevent accidents such as the front stoop, garage entrance, walkways and uneven paths. Place security lights in areas that may be inviting to intruders, such as locations where they can gain easy access to your house that are not visible from the street.

Determine how high you will install the lights. A good location will be just above the garage entry, by the gate, under the eaves or next to a window. Do not hang the lights too low that would make it easier for burglars to reach and remove the bulbs. If you can access it without a ladder, it is probably too low.

Avoid hanging your lights directly towards your neighbor’s windows. The glare from the security light may become a nuisance.

Permit

In some cases, you may need to get a permit when installing outdoor security lights, especially when you are going to put lighting that may need more voltage power than the standard type of lighting. Contact your local building department to help assess your needs when making electrical changes. Passing an electrical inspection will ensure that you will not have problems with fire or electrocution caused by faulty wiring.

Some communities may have restrictions about putting security lights, especially when there are common or shared areas. Obtain an approval from the homeowner’s association prior to installing your security lights to ensure that what you install is within guidelines.

Type of Light Fixture

Pick security lights with automatic light sensors so that they turn on by themselves when it gets darker. Use energy-efficient light fixtures so that even if you leave them on for long hours you will not have to pay high utility bills.

Choose solar, electric or a combination of the two for maximum efficiency. Install solar powered outdoor security lights in areas where you cannot run wires. Make sure to choose spots that get enough sun during the day to keep them energized all night long.

Flood lights can provide wider lighting coverage compared to standard outdoor light fixtures. They are also brighter than most outdoor lights; therefore, are preferable as security lights.

Tools and Materials

Installing electric-powered security lights require more tools and materials than the solar powered types. Before you can install an electric outdoor security light, you will need an extension box, conduit, outdoor box and electrical wires. The tools needed are a hacksaw (to cut holes and trim wire tubes), drill, screwdriver, splicer (for splicing wires), electric tape and channel-lock pliers.
