Infra Red Light Therapy and Sciatica Back Pain – Does it Work?

Herniated Disc, Light Therapy, Nitric Oxide, Sciatica

Infra Red Light Therapy – What is it? And how did it work in my individual case is what this article is all about.

Infra Red Light Therapy is when infra red light through the electrical device is provided upon your ailing muscle or area of pain for fifteen minutes or so at a time.

The unit looks very much like a small iron. I’ll get into it in more detail soon.

I had been suffering from sciatica pain – a horrible sensation of numbness and tingling of the nerves at the back of my thighs to all the way to the toes almost made me bed ridden for the last six months.

Sitting was impossible. I could walk, slowly, very slowly and stand for a little while. I could lie on my tummy or back but that was it. This started in June, 2010. MRI result showed I had a herniated disc and the bulged disc was irritating the sciatic nerves. Cortisone shot helped temporally. Acupuncture did no good. I tried every thing, All kinds of exercises and ointment, homeopathy, like taking Arnica Montana, and so on were tried. I was told that surgery may be the only option, and then there is no guarantee of success for that either.

I tried to learn everything I could on this topic to get better.

At this time I came across the term “Infra red light therapy”

In 1998 a Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery of a free radical gas known as Nitric Oxide (NO). Since its discovery, countless studies have been conducted showing NO to be one of the body’s most powerful vasodilators. This bio-chemical is believed to be released by infrared light therapy, and the mechanism of action that allows it to be so successful.

I came to know that Infra Red light acts on the hemoglobin in blood to cause the release of Nitric Oxide (NO). Nitric Oxide is our body’s most powerful vasodilator. When I have pain for whatever reason, blood flow in that region may decrease, which makes things worse. Once blood flow gets normal I’ll start healing.

What is Infra Red Light Therapy?

It is a particular device, as big as your palm, or like an iron. It costs about $79. You can get it if you go to light relief.com. Amazon is also selling it for $79 with free shipping.

This special thing or unit has red and blue light sources. When plugged at an electric outlet, it gives red and blue light. In a short while the unit warms up, not very hot like the heating pad – just tepid warm. You keep it touching where it hurts for about fifteen minutes and then it shuts off automatically.

I bought this through a TV ad and thought I’ll return it if it does not work.

It is a life saver for me. Gradually almost all my pain is gone now. I used it diligently from September 2010. I have been using it three times a day. In three months, now I am cured.

I have no commercial affiliation with any of the companies or the product. I was benefited through this product and the therapy, so I want to pass it on. Hope it works and heals others who are suffering from back pain and sciatica like I did.
