In D.C., Pizza Mobilizes

For pizza lovers, it’s an exciting time to be alive.

Despite its modest origins in Neapolitan cuisine, the pizza as we know it today has achieved worldwide recognition and become as much an American gastronomic institution as apple pie. This is doubtless due as least partly to its duality, its ability to satisfy a howling appetite as both a quick snack and a main course.

As quick bites go, one might think that it doesn’t get more convenient or more portable than pizza. It is designed to be consumed by the easily handheld slice. Those too time-pressed to sit and enjoy their food can carry a slice with them and eat while they walk. Its preparation is adaptable, tending to vary in style between regions of the globe, or of a single country, or even a single neighborhood. Most of us live within a stone’s throw of an establishment that will deliver it piping hot directly to our doorstep. It is relatively simple to assemble, and once arranged, doesn’t take long to bake. And, perhaps most importantly, it is rendered customizable to individual preference by an ever-expanding universe of meat and vegetable toppings, cheeses, and sauces offering limitless permutations.

Indeed, few snack foods can claim a level of convenience and accessibility comparable to the pizza pie. With regard to accessibility, however, one Washington D.C. enterprise has accomplished the unthinkable: improved upon the already impressive availability of the modern-day pizza.

“From an oven as hot as the sun,” claims the website belonging to a company called DC Slices. Officially launching on Friday, April 16, 2010, DC Slices and its mobile pizza kitchen will roam throughout the district offering up massive six-slice 17-inch pies to pizza-loving residents and visitors. According to the company’s website at http://dcslices.com, it is expected to publish a list of planned stop locations on April 16, 2010. And as cool as the thought of having pizza delivered not to your doorstep, but to wherever in D.C. you might chance to find yourself on a given day might seem, the fact that DC Slices’ pizza truck also functions as a free mobile Wi-Fi hotspot catapults its coolness quotient into the stratosphere.

A single slice topped with your choice of cheese, sopressata, mushrooms, or pepperoni, will cost $4.00, with an entire pizza going for $20.00. Beverages such as water, Coke, or Sprite will quench thirsts for $1.00, or for $3.00, pair your pie with Gatorade or a Red Bull. DC Slices advertises hand-grated cheese and homemade sauce among its ingredients, none of which are ever frozen.

DC Slices rolls out for business on Friday, April, 16 2010, at which time the presently idle “Track the Truck” window on its website will presumably activate, allowing site visitors to follow the truck’s whereabouts in real-time. Whether it’s on your lunch hour, or after the clubs, DC Slices will make sure there’s never a bad time to enjoy a hot slice of pizza.
