If You Want to Help Feed the Homeless..

Fruit Cocktail, Garbage Bags

At the first of the year, one change I decided to make, was to do something to help with the homeless here in Flint.

I mentioned how I wanted to do this to a couple of my friends who obviously were on the same page as me.

Well, that was all it took and since then, we have been getting together once a week and putting a quick meal together.

Here is what we have been doing.

The first time we went out, we made up 30 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, some small chocolate and white milks and a variety of small bags of chips.

I had plenty of Peanut Butter in my cupboard already and also the jelly. I managed to obtain 30 small bags of chips through my church storehouse and then we got it all together as a team and went to a nearby homeless shelter and passed it out around 3:00-4:00 in the afternoon.

It is amazing to me the provision that I believe God has made for us to do this. The following week, the menu became chicken, rice and fruit cocktail.

My fried Linda had mentioned about the chicken and then in it came a provision from God to do this menu. We also was provided over 150 pounds of rice!

Thus far the only financial providing we have had to supply is the throw away tableware such as the Styrofoam folding trays and plastic forks sets. The fruit cocktail was also purchased for this menu.

When this menu was made up, we all met at one persons home and pre made the trays and stacked them inside large new garbage bags and then took them and passed them out at the same site. The new garbage bags were used afterwords for the clean up of their trays etc.

This last Wednesday, I kind of drug my feet because the weather was snowy and the roads were getting bad. However, I know that hunger don’t care about the snow and onward I must go.

This time it was Baked Beans and Weiner’s with sweet potatoes and cornbread. Not only was this provided, there was also a unity between us. I did not talk to anyone right away, but I thought about Beans and wieners for the menu. Much to my surprise, it was also on the minds of my friends too.

From preparing the meal and putting it together, the time spent is approximately one and half hours- two hours. This includes delivery and passing them out.

If anyone decides to do this, make sure at least one male will go with you and never go and hand out the meals alone.

I am only sharing this to allow you to see what can be done if you will put your minds together and take a push in the right direction. I don’t want no glory or applause for this gesture, for the Father I serve knows what the hands of His children do.

Maybe you are not called to do this particular thing, but what is it that you can do to help someone less fortunate than you right around the corner where you live?
