I Skyped My Way to a Special Event from Long Distance and so Can You

Jetsons, Skype

Does anybody out there remember the futuristic cartoon called the Jetsons? Back then the Jetsons family lived with modern conveniences that could only be imagined years ago. That’s how I feel about being able to Skype. Who would have thought that technology would and could take us so far in our world today? Skype is simply a way to communicate with others via the computer utilizing special software which allows participants to see each other.

With the exception of a few members of my family, I live the farthest away. And because of that it’s not always easy to get together for special occasions. It is for this reason that I appreciate the software program Skype. On this particular day a Christmas gathering was taking place.

With my Samsung Galaxy Tab revved to go and my sister having hers out of state, the process of talking and seeing each other began. It turned out to be a wonderful evening of “face to face” fellowship from afar.

Uses for Skype

Can you imagine what a lifesaver this software program offers for so many people? I think about that son or daughter who is leaving home for the very first time to attend college. Wouldn’t it be nice to Skype with them? It might help with those bouts of homesickness too.

If you are grandparents that live away from your grandchildren this could definitely be a godsend and a good way of seeing these precious ones grow up and reach major milestones in their life.

Perhaps you know someone serving in the military. Wouldn’t it be nice to see them via Skype? While it’s not the same as being there, it might be the next best thing.

Are you involved in a long distance relationship that is being strained because of the miles and time spent apart from each other? No doubt this poses a challenge in itself. Before calling it quits why not try to Skpye with each other on a regular basis? It might be worth a try.

Special events such as a wedding, birthday celebration or reunion would be an ideal way for others to be involved without actually being on the premises.

What do you need to Skype?

According to the Skype website it says that you need a webcam, an internet connection, a computer or mobile device with a microphone and speakers. It also states that the following items are free, “Your Skype account and the latest downloads, video and voice calls to anyone else on Skype along with instant messaging and file sharing”.

Both parties must have a Skype account which is very easy to set up. Go to their website at www.skype.com and see how simple it is. You can even download their App to your tablet, mobile device or computer.

Advantages of Using Skype

You can stay on Skype conversing with family and friends for as long as you like. You are only limited by the time that you choose to stay on.

Now that I have the ability to do this, I intend to use it when I have the urge to not just talk to someone but also to see them if they have a Skype account. And it’s good for local use too.
