Hungry Howie’s: The Best Pizza in Pensacola

Cinnamon Bread

I have been led to understand that depending upon where you hang your hat, a person may have access to pizza joints to which I do not. Apparently, there are more pizza restaurants in heaven and earth-or least America-than are dreamt of in most people’s philosophy. Sure, we’ve all got access to a nearby Pizza Hut and Domino’s delivers everywhere and Papa John’s has their fresher pizza nearby, but for every one of those there is a smaller pizza place that you are more than likely committed to. Often these are old time mom and pop pizza joints that have been around since soldiers coming back from Italy following World War II brought news of this wonderful discovery. Others are simply smaller franchises, waiting to make it big.

In my house, the number one choice for pizza is Hungry Howie’s. In fact, we no longer refer to that day in the middle of the week as Wednesday. Wednesday is officially pizza day because Hungry Howie’s chose that day to offer their weekly special known as Wacky Wednesday. I guess they kind of had to make that choice; having Wacky Wednesday on Thursday just makes no sense. Wacky Wednesday at Hungry Howie’s means a large pizza with one topping for about six bucks. In addition, Hungry Howie’s is also our pizza of choice because of their flavored crust. We prefer the Cajun crust, which is appropriately spicy. In fact, depending on who made it that day-I guess-the Cajun crust from Hungry Howie’s can be quite spicy. In addition to Cajun flavoring, Hungry Howie’s also offers up such delectable crusts as Garlic, Sesame, Buttercheese, Rye, and Poppy Seed.

Of course, if you aren’t necessarily in the mood for pizza, Hungry Howie’s has menu alternatives. They’ve got some really tasty buffalo wings they call Howie Wings, served with either Ranch of Bleu Cheese dressing. The wings aren’t suicidally hot, but they are good. If buffalo wings are too hot for you no matter, then try the chicken tenders. Hungry Howie’s also has salads for those who wish to pass on pizza. They offer up a Spicy Chicken Salad, Antipasto Salad, a Greek Salad and a Chef Salad. And just like Elaine on Seinfeld prefers, these are BIG salads. You really get your money’s worth.

As for me, when I’m not in the mood for pizza, I can always turn to Hungry Howie’s oven baked subs. You can get them in large or small sizes, and the large is a meal unto itself. My favorites are the Pizza Sub and the Deluxe Combination sub, which comes with pepperoni, ham, and Italian sausage, as well as lettuce, tomatoes and peppers. This is good stuff; I’m telling you. They’ve got a veggie sub if you aren’t a meat eater, as well a very good steak and mushrooms sub. In addition, they’ve got a meatball sub, a turkey melt and an Italian sub which for some reason I haven’t yet tried. Go figure. The Pizza Sub is like a eating a pizza sandwich. To complete the non-pizza menu items at Hungry Howie’s, you can also get baked spaghetti, chicken parmesan, or lasagna. Be sure to order some Howie bread with sauce on the side. And finish it off with either cinnamon bread or a pie. The decision is yours: apple or cherry.

I know this sounds like a commercial, but I can assure you I’m not being paid by Hungry Howie’s to promote the product. It’s simply that good. I don’t go out of my way to promote any product unless I really like it and I can tell you that a week around here with Hungry Howie’s is like a week without a scandal out of the Bush White House.
