How to Wood Burn Engrave Your Own Baseball Bat

Baseball Bat, Engraving, Wood Burning

Wood burning your own baseball is a simple and fun craft project that is perfect for baseball lovers of any age. I always see those great booths at the baseball stadium that engraves wood baseball bats. Well, just to be honest, they cost a fortune. I really just do not know anyone who can afford to buy a wood burned engraved baseball bat for one or all of their kids.

Wood burning your own baseball in any script or design you want is simple to do. If you do want to have the kids make this simple wood burning project with you though, be sure to help them. The wood burning tool has a very hot point that is not meant for skin to touch.

Now, to engrave your Own Baseball Bat with a Wood burning Tool You Will need:

1 Baseball Bat (I like the unfinished kind)
1 Wood burning toll kit
Duct tape
Flat work surface
Letter Stencils (optional)
Wood Stain (optional)

Ok, so I personally to make this simple baseball inspired project with an unfinished baseball bat that does not have the shiny sealer on the wood. Now, honestly this is because I like to stain my baseball bat darker than the regular light wood color. Your wood burning tool will burn through that shiny layer, so you can decide which way you want to do this simple wood burning project!

Lay you wood baseball bat out on a flat surface. It needs to be stable. Now, you want to lay the part of the bat up that you will be wood burning with your engraving.

Use a piece of duct tape on each end to hold it in place If you are doing this wood burning project with your kids, then maybe you could hold the baseball bat for them as an excuse to really be looking over their shoulder while they use the wood burning tool.

Now, I bought my wood burning tool at Michaels Arts and Craft store for about $9.99. It came with about 6 different tips so I could control what my wood burning design looks like. The great thing about investing in this simple wood burning kit is that you can use it for years to come in a variety of new ways.

Now, to take this simple engraving project one step further and really get a professional look you should buy some simple letter stencils from the arts and craft store. You can find them in almost any size and style of font.

Plug you wood burning tool in while you work on the stencil. This way it will be ready when you are ready to start engraving your baseball bat.

Tip: Always put the desired metal tip on the wood burning tool while cool. Do this and then plug it in. I like to use the smallest metal tip that looks like a pencil point for this simple project.

Now, tape your letter stencils in place on the baseball bat. I like to use masking tape for this step. Use a black sharpie marker to trace in the outlines of your engraving. You could also use a pencil if you are using an unfinished baseball bat.

Now, remove the stencil to reveal your words and inscription the baseball bat.

Now, use the wood burning tool to slowly engrave your letters into the baseball bat. I recommend having a scarp piece of wood around to practice your wood burning and engraving techniques first if you have never worked with a wood burning tool.

Slowly work your wood burning tool along the letters you have written on the bat. I like to outline the letters first, and then slowly “color” in the middle to darken them.

Now that is easy and you spent time with your kids making their very own wood burned and engrave baseball bat.
