How to Stop a Flea Bite from Itching

Icy Hot

I am highly allergic to a flea bite. The bites swell worse than a mosquito bite and itches non stop. The other night I woke up scratching myself in my sleep. The bites are always in the worse places, my ankles and feet. This causes major discomfort when I have to go to work because of wearing shoes and socks. I do my best not to scratch because it really only causes it to get worse. But since I can’t stop myself in my sleep I now have to wear socks and shoes over open wounds!

So if there is anyone out there that has this same problem then I’m going to share my little secrets that I have found. First you need to stop the little buggers from biting. How do you do that? Well kill them! I used Sergeant’s gold household flea and tick spray. This promised 210 days of protection and was very simple to use. I haven’t seen a flea in the last 4 days. Now I have piece of mind that I’m not going to be eaten alive anymore. So now it is time to treat those awful bites. I have been cleaning them really good first I start with a hot salty foot soak. This helps with drying up the open wounds. After that its plain old soap and water. I scrub really good because I don’t want any of these to get infected. Now I need to stop the itch so I can get threw the night. I have found Tinactin really helps a lot. It makes the burning and itching go away immediately. The only problem I have is that sometimes I have to get up in the middle of the night and re-apply it. But I would say it works the best out of anything for the simple fact that its not messy and gets the job done.

Here is a list of other OTC products that can also offer relief.
1.) Icy Hot
2.) Vick’s vapor rub
3.) Benadryl gel or cream
4.) Calamine lotion
5.) Cortisone 10

I found that anything that has menthol in it helps to cool the burning and inflammation. It also numbs the skin and stops the itching. I have found these products to be soothing on my own. So I urge you to speak with you Doctor before trying any of these products. The last thing you want to do is cause the bites to get worse or to get an allergic reaction from something else. So talk to your Doctor they know best.

Other tips I have found to help reduce an infestation is to keep your house dry as possible. Fleas need moisture to survive. Take away their water and you get dried up fleas that you can vacuum up and throw away. Air conditioners work well to take moisture out of the air. But its best to get a dehumidifier. Flea powders work well but can cause a mess. Fleas eat the powder and it causes them to get constipated and they die. But the best thing you can do is vacuum, vacuum vacuum!!! Don’t forget the throw away the bag or they will just craw back out again. Unless you spray the bag with a flea killing spray.

You will get through this. Your not alone, there are allot of us out here that are dealing with the same problem. Just be patient and do the best you can to deal with it. Your bites will be gone before you know it.
