Best 5 Places to Take the Kids in Jacksonville, Florida

Adventure Landing, Jacksonville Florida, Jacksonville Zoo, Summer Recreation

Looking for a place to spend time with the kids in Jacksonville this summer? The city certainly has a lot to offer families in the way of summer recreation. There are summer activities to suit all budgets and tastes. Here’s a short rundown on a few of the best ones:

1. Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is located on Zoo Parkway. It tends to open daily at 9 a.m. Parking is free but admission will cost you, unless you happen to be a child 2 years of age or younger. Admission prices start at $10 for kids. You can also schedule behind-the-scenes tours of the zoo through the Corporate Events Coordinator for $30 per person. In my opinion, the behind-the-scenes tours are super for older kids. If you want to check one out for yourself, you’ll usually need to book it at least two weeks in advance.

2. Museum of Science and History

The Museum of Science and History is located on Museum Circle. It generally opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday. Admission prices start at $8 for kids and $10 for adults. Many of the younger kids I know of enjoy both “The Body Within” and the Florida Naturalist’s Center exhibits the most. The facility also hosts special events throughout the summer.

3. Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located on North Laura Street. In my opinion, the best time for families to visit is on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. During that time, admission is usually waived as part of the museum’s ArtFusion program. As part of the program, parents can complete art projects onsite with their children. I’d also suggest visiting the museum’s ArtExplorium Loft. It is an interactive, kid-friendly area that the whole family can enjoy. The museum is typically open Tuesday through Sunday and regular admission starts at $5 for children and $8 for adults.

4. Adventure Landing

Adventure Landing is located on Blanding Boulevard and features a variety of kid friendly activities. Some of the activities include go-carting, miniature golf and laser tag. It usually opens daily at 10 a.m. Prices vary based on what activity your family wishes to engage in. In my experience, most activities will cost you roughly $7 per person. One of the best times to visit is on Saturday when the facility traditionally offers a $10 special that includes arcade tokens, laser tag and miniature golf.

5. Tree Hill Nature Center

The Tree Hill Nature Center is located on Lone Star Road. In my opinion, it is a super and inexpensive place to take the kids. While there, you can take guided hikes, wander through a nature museum and interact with animals. The facility opens at 8:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday and admission prices start at a modest $2 per child. My favorite time to visit is during the Butterfly Festival. It is generally held in the spring. I like it because the festival’s admission price is low and there are a lot of free crafts and activities available for the kids.
