How to Sew, Seams

What could possibly, be better than snuggling under a soft and warm fleece rag quilt on a cold winter day? Snuggling under a soft and warm fleece rag quilt, you made with your own two hands! You can design your fleece rag quilt in your favorite colors or make a fleece rag quilt, as a gift for someone special.

Materials

Fleece fabric (2 colors)
ruler or tape measure
straight pins
scissors
sewing machine

Directions

To begin your fleece rag quilt, begin by cutting the fleece fabric into long strips that measure 8″ wide. Now cut the 8″ wide strips into 8″ squares. Cut 96 – 8″ squares of each color. For a combined total of 192 – 8″ squares.

Now you are ready to make the quilt squares. Lay 2 – 8″ squares (one of each color), wrong sides together on top of each other. Starting 1″ from the corner, sew a diagonal line within 1″ of the opposite corner. Next add another stitch in the same manner on the last 2 corners, you should have an X stitched across the square. Continue sewing all of the squares together, the same way.

Once all of the squares have been sewn (with an X), you can begin to assemble your fleece rag quilt together. Start by laying 2 fabric squares on top of one another with the back sides together. Starting 1 inch from the corner, sew a 1″ seam down the side, stopping within an inch of the other corner. Now sew another square onto the end, of 1 of the 2 squares. Make sure you alternate the colors of fleece. Again sew a 1″ seam. Be sure to keep all of the seams on the same side. One side of the fleece rag quilt should be smooth and the other side will have the rag effect. Continue this step until you have 6 squares sewn together. Continue this procedure until you have made 8 strips with 6 squares in a strip.

Now you can start sewing the strips together. Lay 2 of the strips together, with the smooth sides facing each other. Make sure you line up the seams, and pin the strips together. Sew the 2 strips together with a 1″ seam. Repeat this step until all 8 strips have been sewn on. Once you have sewn all of the strips together, sew a 1-inch seam all the way around the fleece rag quilt.

Next, with the seams facing up, use scissors to cut the seam allowance approx. every 1/4″ (careful not to cut the seam itself) to create a fringe look. This will help give your fleece rag quilt the rag look.

When you have finished snipping the seams, wash your fleece rag quilt in the washer and dry it in the dryer. This will fluff up the rag seams. Your fleece rag quilt is finished. Enjoy your warm and snugly new quilt.

Tips: Unlike other fabrics that usually require pre-washing and drying, this isn’t required when using fleece (it doesn’t tend to shrink). Two layers of fleece will make a very warm blanket, so batting isn’t required.

Make a special fleece rag quilt, in bright cheery colors for the children in your life. Children love the soft feel of fleece, and a new fleece rag quilt will surely become their favorite blanket.
