How to Pray the Rosary

Crucifix, Hail Mary, Rosary, Virgin Mary

The Rosary are a string of beads that are tied together and meant for use in prayer and meditation to honor our Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God on the divine virtues of faith, hope, love and charity. The word rosary is a Latin word that means a garland of roses and the rose is a flower that is used to symbolize the Virgin Mary. The Rosary is used and recognized as a true biblical form of prayer and meditation that comes from the bible. If you don’t have a personal Rosary at hand, you can interactively Pray The Rosary Online.

Here are the steps on how to use your personal Rosary to pray and meditate to honor our Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

Begin praying the Rosary by holding the crucifix and making the sign of the cross. Next, you will place your fingers on the single bead just above the crucifix and say the “Our Father” prayer. The next three beads, you will say the “Hail Mary” prayer, one bead per “Hail Mary”. As you say these prayers, meditate on the divine virtues of faith, hope, love and charity of our Blessed Virgin Mary. After the three “Hail Mary” prayers, on the chain at the joiner, you will say the “Glory Be” prayer.

The next single bead, you will announce the first divine mystery of contemplation and say the “Our Father” prayer. This will bring you to your first decade where you will say ten “Hail Mary” prayers (one Hail Mary per bead), while contemplating the first mystery. You will then come to another single bead and you will pray the “Glory Be” prayer and the “O My Jesus” prayer. Here you will announce the second mystery and say the “Our Father” Prayer.

You will then continue say another ten “Hail Mary” prayers, one bead per Hail Mary and you will continue the sequence as above until you have reached the fifth mystery that brings you back to the joiner. At this point you can keep praying or you can end by saying the “Glory Be” prayer, the “O My Jesus” prayer, the “Our Father” Prayer, and the “Hail Holy Queen” prayer. End with the sign of the cross. All the prayers for the rosary are below.

The Prayers for the Rosary

  • Sign of the Cross: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
  • The Apostle’s Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator Creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
  • Our Father: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
  • Hail Mary: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
  • Glory Be: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the biginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen
  • Oh My Jesus: Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy Mercy.
  • Hail, Holy Queen: Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping int he vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto use the blessed fruit of the womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.
