How to Manage PCOS Naturally

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive disorder in women of child bearing age. Are there ways to manage it without over-the-counter drugs? You bet! Here is the program that I designed and used to manage my PCOS.

Exercise: Women living with PCOS are often intimately familiar with the weight gain that ensues. To combat this, an exercise plan consisting of both aerobic and anaerobic activities should be implemented. Personally, the pain I experienced daily prevented me from enjoying simple activities like jogging, running, and kickboxing. I countered this annoyance by becoming an avid walker. Anaerobic exercises, specifically weightlifting, were and still are an integral part of my exercise regimen.

Diet: Shedding the excess pounds associated with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome won’t be effectively achieved by exercise alone. We must be mindful of what we put in our bodies. This is especially important for those women with PCOS who are trying to conceive. Consult your healthcare provider for diet suggestions.

Herbal remedies: Herbs known to affect hormone levels may help with unpleasant symptoms such as hot flashes, excess hair growth, and skin breakouts. Some herbs that may be beneficial in managing PCOS are Dong Quai, red clover, wild yam, and fenugreek. Natural progesterone cream, such as Sarati International, may also help relieve PCOS symptoms.

Stress reduction: For those women who are experiencing symptoms and have not yet been diagnosed with PCOS, the concern over what is happening to their bodies may cause stress. Couples wanting to conceive will understandably experience emotional and mental stress. I was very concerned as I watched my body balloon from 160lbs to over 220lbs in one year with no changes in my eating habits. The changes in my body coupled with my arrogant healthcare provider produced great amounts of stress. It was during these times that I rediscovered meditation. Meditation doesn’t have to be elaborate and time consuming. Just sit or lie somewhere that’s comfortable and quiet for five to ten minutes and focus solely on the rhythm of your breathing. If you don’t fancy meditation choose any (healthy and safe) method of channeling your pent up energy.

Positive thinking: Last, but not least, women wanting to manage PCOS naturally should incorporate positive thinking into their daily schedules. This may seem trite, but the power of the mind is incredible. Positive thinking can be accomplished in the form of prayer, daily affirmations, or simply dismissing negative thoughts. A simple way to bring positive thinking into your everyday routine is to look in a mirror and elaborate on the phrase, “Today I will…” As you’re stating the goal you want to achieve, visualize yourself actually achieving that goal. Do this daily in regards to your PCOS for one month and watch your symptoms improve.

I still have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and, as you may know, there is no cure for it. However, doing everything I’ve described, my body is now pain free. My cycles are now regular and I’m actually looking forward to wearing a bathing suit this summer. Exercise, eat healthfully, try an herbal supplement, reduce stress, and think positively because you can manage PCOS naturally.

Note: consult your primary care provider before using any of the above methods. Allergic reactions to some herbs have been documented. Please carefully research any herbs or supplements.
