With the price of gas skyrocketing and today’s economy who doesn’t need to save some money? Smoking is bad for you, we all know that, but I am not ready to quit, and I don’t want to be broke either. Tired of paying five dollars or more per pack? You can make your own for a little over one dollar per pack ($1.19 – $1.50) at home in your spare time.

To get started you need to find a tobacco shop in your area, or online. Most real tobacco shops can walk you through the whole process. I went in and told the salesperson what I smoked and they told me what type of tobacco and tubes were comparable. They also gave me a quick “how-to” lesson, and it’s not difficult at all.
I buy the tubes with filters so they will also look like normal cigarettes and not like something you could get pulled over for. I started with an inexpensive hand machine; the price range is about $8.00-$10.00. After using that for a week I upgraded to a table-top machine which costs about $60.00 because it was much faster than the hand-held machine.
Here is a quick breakdown of roughly it will cost to make your own cigarettes. Not including the price of the machine listed above: Large bag of Tobacco; $17.95 (makes approximately two cartons). Two boxes of Tubes $5.90 (two boxes of king size filters at $2.95 ea). For a total of $23.85 for two cartons; that’s only $1.20 per pack!! A huge savings if you are a moderate to heavy smoker. This dollar figure varies based on the brand of tobacco you smoke etc…
They sell every variety tobacco, and filter, whether you like lights, menthols, full flavor or ultra lights. It has saved my husband and I quite a bit of money. It does not take a long time to do either, only about five minutes per pack. It’s also really easy, on the machine I purchased it only takes three steps to make your own cigarette. Step one; Slide on the filtered tube. Step Two; sprinkle in the desired amount of tobacco, and tuck into the corners of the openings to avoid a gap. Step three; pull the lever, that’s it, your done.
Smoking is a bad habit and has a laundry list of health risks. But if you are going to smoke this is a great way to save money. You can also buy hard plastic cases for around $1.99-$4.50. You reuse the case over and over instead of throwing out empty pack after pack of cigarettes, in a sense recycling the case. Smoking will never be good for you, but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want to save money in this tight economy.
