How to Make the Most of the Toys R Us Return Policy

Babies R Us, Toys R Us

The Toys R Us return policy is easy to understand and easy to follow. The store, and it’s baby-related sister store, Babies R Us, make it relatively easy to return an item, while protecting their own interests.

Before I delve into the specifics of the Toys R Us return policy, let me share my top five tips based on my experience with the policy.
1. Hold on to your receipt or packing slip! This makes the return process go much smoother and will completely eliminate the possibility of having the return rejected, unless you are past the 90 day time limit.
2. Speaking of the time limit, return the item as soon as possible! On most items you only have 90 days to make the return (some specific items only allow for half of that).
3. Keep your item in the original packaging! Unless you’re returning an item because it was defective or recalled, having the item in the original packaging will make Toys R Us much more likely to accept the return.
4. If you’re a Babies R Us registry customer making a purchase for yourself, add it to your registry first, and then make sure the cashier scans the registry! This way, you have one additional layer of proof-of-purchase, should something happen to the receipt (for example, I accidentally left mine in my pocket, and then did the laundry…)
5. Know the Toys R Us return policy, understand the Toys R Us return policy, and if you have questions about the Toys R Us return policy, ask it at the time of purchase! If there is anything you’re unclear about, and you’re making purchase in-store, that is the time to ask.

Just to restate what may already be obvious from the details above, don’t expect a return to be made without some proof that the purchase was made within the last 90 days. Depending on the store you go to and the mood of the manager on that given day, if you don’t have a receipt you may be rejected for a return. (I’ve also found that, normally, the nicer you are to the manager, the more likely he or she is to accept your return without a receipt, but even this isn’t a guarantee.)

Now that my recommendations are out of the way, here are some of the basics of the Toys R Us return policy.

What is the Toys R Us Return Policy?
The most recent Toys R Us return policy, which was made effective December 2, 2007, has the following requirements:
– Returns must be made within 90 days of original purchase dates.
– Item must be returned in original carton or package with all parts and materials.
– To make a return, you must have the original receipt or a gift receipt. At Toys R Us stores, there are no returns without a receipt.
– Babies R Us will take returns without a receipt, provided you have an active gift registry, and the item was purchased from the registry within the last 90 days. You will receive a merchandise credit for registry returns not accompanied by a receipt.
– If returning a VHS, DVD, Breast Pump, Monitor, or other electronic item, the item must be returned within 45 days, with receipt, and still in the sealed, unopened package. If it has been opened, you can only exchange it for an identical item.
– If you are receiving a refund for a return accompanied by a receipt, it will generally be refunded to the original source of payment. Purchases made by cash, debit card, and checks (after 7 days of purchase date) will be refunded in cash. Credit card purchases will be refunded to the credit card you used to make the purchase. Gift cards, purchases with gift receipts, and purchases paid for by check within the last 7 days will be refunded in the form of merchandise credit.

Where Can You Find the Toys R Us Return Policy?
The Toys R Us return policy is posted and distributed in many places.

The first place I saw the Toys R Us return policy was on a large sign, right next to the customer service desk, at the entrance to the store.

I also received a copy of the Toys R Us return policy when purchasing an item in the store. The cashier placed my receipt inside a little paper folder which details the return policy as it was updated on December 2, 2007.

You can also view the Toys R Us return policy on the Toys R Us and Babies R Us websites. The Toys R Us and Babies R Us websites go into more detail about the return policy, including the policy for returning items that were purchased online.

The Toys R Us return policy page can be found on the web here.

Finally, if you purchase an item online from Toys R Us or Babies R Us, the Toys R Us return policy is printed on the packing slip that will be included with your shipment.

What is the Toys R Us return policy for returning items purchased online?
For this, you will need to look at your packing slip. Some items may be labeled “not returnable to stores” and you will need to ship it to the return center. There are detailed instructions on how to do this on the Toys R Us return policy page.

If the item is returnable to stores, for best results, you will want to bring your packing slip with you. I recently tried to return an item purchased from a Babies R Us registry, but they had trouble finding the record of the item being purchased and initially refused the return. When I returned with the packing slip a few days later, they returned it without question.
