How to Make Peppermint Body Powder

Body Powder, Lavender Oil, Talc, Witch Hazel

Peppermint body powder is a cool, tingly way to stay refreshed. It smells amazing, feels silky smooth on skin, and does not contain talc. Since many people are choosing to avoid talc for health reasons, and due to the fact that talc cakes easily and wears off quickly, a corn starch based powder is always a hit.

During the warm months I sprinkle on this powder all the time, and find that it keeps me dry and revitalized all day. I also make batches of this powder at Christmas and it is always well received. In fact, I have two relatives who come back for a “Christmas in July” refill!

So how do you make this delightful peppermint powder?

– What you’ll need:

2 cups of cornstarch
1-2 teaspoon(s) peppermint oil (depending on how minty you want your finished product)
1 teaspoon lavender oil
1 1/2 teaspoons of witch hazel

– How to make the powder:

The easiest way to make this peppermint powder is to use your blender.

1. Put the witch hazel, lavender oil, and peppermint oil into a small bowl and blend well.
2. Next, add 2 cups of cornstarch to the blender, and start blending using the lowest setting you have.
3. Slowly drizzle the oil and witch hazel mixture into the cornstarch as the blender continues to mix.
4. After the powder has been thoroughly blended together, pour or scoop it into a clean container or powder shaker type dispenser. I find it easiest to tilt the blender and scrape the product slowly out of the blender.

Don’t have a blender? You can get the same, wonderfully minty results by using a bowl instead. Just put the cornstarch into a large bowl, then mix the witch hazel, lavender oil, and peppermint oil in a separate small bowl. Next, add the oil/witch hazel mixture to the cornstarch as you mix by hand.

Whichever method you choose, in about 15 minutes you will have about a pound of delicious smelling peppermint powder.

– How to package the powder:

For my own use, I put the peppermint powder into a glass powder jar and use a large puff to apply the finished product. I also have a small shaker type container for when I am on the go, or just need a quick pick me up.

When I give the peppermint powder as gifts, I use shaker containers that have been decorated. Since I like to draw, I tend to create pretty floral designs on the cardboard shaker container, or I will use a graphics program on my computer (such as Photoshop) to create personalized labels that can be stuck onto the containers.

You could also use screw top jars that allow you to seal the jar tightly during mailing. Or you could head out to your local antique store and search for the beautiful, crystal powder jars of yesteryear. Who wouldn’t love getting one of those as a gift?

The shaker containers, as well as a variety jars, can be found at Mountain Rose Herbs.

However you choose to package your peppermint powder, I know it will be as big a hit with your friends and family as it is with mine. They will appreciate the fact that you took the time to make them something wonderful, and you will appreciate how quick and easy this project is. Have fun!
