How to Make Homemade Fried Onion Hamburgers

Hamburger Patties, Hamburgers

When I lived in Oklahoma, my grandparents got me hooked on fried onion burgers from J&W; Grill in Chickasha, Oklahoma. When my husband and I lived in Chickasha, Oklahoma for a year, we would eat at J&W; Grill at least once a week.

We would order a side of fries to go with these fried onion burgers at J&W.; However, we found the order of fries were enough for two people. So we would order one basket of fries and share.

We live in Kansas now and have to make our own fried onion hamburgers because we haven’t found any place that can make them anywhere close to J&W.; By making my own homemade fried onion hamburgers, I can get close to those memories I have from eating the fried onion hamburgers with my grandparents at J&W; Grill.

Homemade Fried Onion Hamburgers

Ingredients
1 lb. ground beef
1 large onion sliced thin and separated
2 TBS butter
Salt
Pepper
Cheese, any kind
Hamburger buns

NOTE: Frozen hamburger patties can be used.

Optional Items
Pickles
Lettuce
Tomato
Mayonnaise
Ketchup
Mustard
Chips or French fries

Cooking the Hamburger Patties

Heat a large skillet. Make the patties from the hamburger meat. Place the patties in the hot skillet. Salt and pepper the side that is up. Cook patties until the edges start to turn. About 3 minutes.

Flip the patties and squish. Cook 3 minutes and turn. Squish again. At the end of the second 3 minutes, turn again. Squish the hamburger patties to see if the juices are running clear. If not, cook the hamburger patties longer until juices run clear. Once the juices run clear, add cheese to the patties and let melt.

Frying the Onions

You will want to fry the onions while the hamburger patties are cooking. This way they will be done at the same time.

In a small hot skillet, put in the butter and melt. Once the butter is melted and starting to sizzle, add the onion rings and fry until translucent and some have the brown fried look to them.

Assembling the Fried Onion Hamburgers

I normally slice the tomato and cut the lettuce while the onions and hamburger patties are cooking. I will also have, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and pickles out on the counter. I let my family build their own from there.

If you prefer to build the homemade fried onion burgers. Place the hamburger patty top with cheese on the bottom bun, add the fried onions, and the lettuce. On the top bun, add whichever condiment the person wants, the pickles, and tomato.

Flip the top bun onto the bottom with the other items. Place the fried onion hamburger on a plate with chips or fries.

Conclusion

By making my own homemade fried onion hamburgers, I can share the same memories with my husband and daughter that I had with my grandparents and husband when we lived in Oklahoma.
