How to Make Great Lo Mein at Home

I bet you are just like me and love Chinese food but don’t always have to money to buy it. Well, I’ve found an easy solution for that problem and you can make it yourself at home in just 30 minutes.

Let’s start with my favorite – Shrimp Lo Mein.

You can find the same noodles they use at your local Chinese restaurant in your neighborhood Wal-Mart our grocery store in the oriental foods section of the store. In that same section you will also find the Lo Mein sauce you will need. I like the La Choy brand of sauce myself, but you can probably find other brands of sauce for a lower price.

After you have your sauce and noodles, head over to the frozen food section and find oriental stir fry and raw or cooked shrimp in any size you want.

Alright, now we have all our supplies, let’s start cooking.

If you choose to buy the raw shrimp, your first step is to peel the shells off. Then put them in a standard-sized sauce pan with ¾ cup of water and 2 teaspoons of butter or margarine and cook on medium temperature.

While that is cooking, start a pot of water to boil for your noodles. Once your shrimp is done put them in a bowl on the side and start your stir fry with a half teaspoon of margarine or butter in a large sauce pan, cook on medium temperature for 5 minutes.

Add the noodles to the now boiling water and cook for 3 minutes then drain and sit to the side. Once the vegetables are done, add in the shrimp, noodles and the La Choy Lo Mein Sauce and mix well. Let simmer for 2 to 3 minutes then grab the chop sticks and enjoy.

Now let’s try – Chicken Lo Mein.

Just like the shrimp Lo Mein, you will need to buy the Chinese noodles to make the chicken Lo Mein. You will also need a five pound pack of boneless and skinless chicken breast, a bottle of La Choy Lo Mein sauce and a bag of oriental stir fry.

First, cut the chicken breast lengthwise as thin as you possibly can then cut each slice into squares. Once that is done, put chicken in a medium skillet with 1 cup of water and 2 teaspoons of margarine or butter with your choice of seasoning.

Let cook on low temperature while rotating the pieces every few minutes until all the chicken is done. While the chicken is cooking, start a medium pan of water for the noodles. Bring water to a boil then add in your noodles for roughly 3 minutes. Drain and rinse in cool water.

Once the chicken and noodles are done, grab a large non-stick skillet and begin your oriental stir fry with 1/2 teaspoon of margarine or butter. Let simmer on medium temperature for approximately 5 minutes.

When stir fry is done, add in the chicken, your bottle of La Choy Lo Mein sauce and the noodles. Let simmer on low temperature for about 2 to 3 minutes then serve.
