How to Make Decorative Coasters

Mod Podge, Shellac

It’s always nice to have coasters to protect your tables if you want them protected from sweating glasses. However, sometimes the coasters that are wanted cannot be found. The project takes a bit of time, but you can easily make your own personalized decorative coasters. Here is the instruction for making one coaster. If you want to make more coasters, follow these instructions for each one.

What You Will Need:

A ceramic tile

Sponge brush

Mod Podge or other decoupage finish

A pair of scissors

Napkin with decoration of your choice

Pens, pencils, and markers of your choice (optional)

Shellac or vinyl finish (optional)

Instructions:

Start by unfolding the napkin so all four squares of the napkin are showing.

Using the scissors, cut the napkin along the creases made from the folds.

Take one of the square’s from the napkin and turn it so the side with the design is showing. If you wish to create any more of your own design, draw with any of the pens, pencils, or markers to make your own designs instead of just the designs on the napkin (although you can choose to only use the design on the napkin, too).

Put the fourth of the napkin to the side so it is out of the way, but within your reach.

Use the sponge brush to dip into the Mod Podge. Only a small bit on the edges of the brush are needed. Rub this on the top of the ceramic tile so it is a smooth layer.

Once the Mod Podge is on the ceramic tile in a smooth layer, pick up the fourth of the napkin that you are going to use to make the coaster.

Carefully place the napkin, design side up (blank side toward the ceramic tile), so the design is where you want it on the coaster. Gently touch it with your fingers to get it to stick and be smooth on the tile. Do not try to move it. It needs to be positioned before being placed on the Mod Podge because it will tear.

Once the napkin is placed, take the sponge paint brush and use the Mod Podge that is still on it to carefully touch the napkin. Do not brush the Mod Podge onto the napkin as the napkin will tear.

Let the Mod Podge dry.

Once the Mod Podge is dry, take the tile with the napkin on it again and dab more Mod Podge on the top. Hopefully it now has a harder layer on the top and some of the Mod Podge can be brushed a little bit.

Once again, let the Mod Podge dry.

After the Mod Podge is dry, finish making the coaster by putting a third coat of Mod Podge on, which should be able to be brushed now.

Let the Mod Podge dry.

Using the scissors, cut off any extra napkin that is sticking off of the edge of the tile.

You do not have to use the shellac, but if you prefer, once the coaster is dry and any extra bits of napkin are no longer on it, you can spray shellac on the tile to help coat the design you made with the napkin and any drawing.

Let the shellac dry. After the shellac dries, you have a decorative coaster. You can make decorative coasters for your home, for a gift, or for selling for a fundraiser.
